Fish-Bait

Hey ever'body! Got back Sunday Mornin' from Island Hoppin' in the MS Sound. Had a pretty good time, but the fishin' was kinda slow for me.
Got a Call from a buddy of mine Friday mornin'. He was takin' his boy and his boy's roomie for a campin' trip before they head off to be edgeecated at Ole Miss. He asked if I would go along and of course I said yes.
I started loadin' up the Whaler Friday night, but didn't get finished. As some of you already know Saturday mornin' didn't start out as the best of the best with my Lab gettin' bleach all over her (and no....she is still a chocalate lab!) and freakin' us out. She is makin' a grand recovery though.
Finished packin' the whaler around lunch and kissed the wife and babies goodbye and streaked South to good ole' Pascagoula. Got on the water bout' 2:30 p.m. and we set sail for Round Island (http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=339). Lot of history behind the old lighthouse. Anyways we got settled in our little campsite around 4 p.m. and I told em' Horn Island (http://www.cclockwood.com/stockimages/mississippi_hornisland.htm)was callin' the ole Fish-Bait and hopped back into the whaler, which I could actually walk around in now that all my camp stuff was unloaded. I took an empty (32 oz.) Gatorade bottle, stuffed it with ice, poured it full of Quervo Margarita, put the lid on it and buried it deep in the ice chest for the trip back.
So it had been awhile since I fished Horn, I figured I would just go West of the Ranger Station and drift the grass beds. Well, the grass beds ain't what they used to be. Didn't see any of the old eel grass, just the mushy lookin' stuff. Twenty years ago there wasn't any grass out there, so some grass was good. After I had drifted a mile down the beach and cast 5647 times without so much as a follow up I finally hooked up....with a ladyfish or poormans tarpon (http://www.lagooner.com/fish-species/index.php?species_id=7).
I really was frustrated, but hey, they put up one helluva an acrobatic display dancin' all around on top of the water.
I figured it was time for a break and a cold brew so I just chilled out and threw back a cold one. Now me bein' the old Fish-Bait I just couldn't give up without catchin' somethin' worth mentioning so I decided to fish one more pod of grass. You know it, I caught six. Had 3 throw-backs and 3 keepers from 15-18 inches. Whew!!!! I thought I was gonna ZERO! Had em' for supper Sunday night too, ummmm good!
My arms were tired, I was tired, and I just wanted to go set on the beach and kick my feet up so I eased out of the flats and then remebered I had that eye poppin, ice cold, 32 oz. Margarita in the chest........it was pure enjoyment.
I did manage to get some sunset pics while back at Round. I am gonna try to make another gallery (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/gallery/index.php?cat=12553) for them tonight.
I was tired Sunday, but it was totally worth the effort, even if Mother Nature toyed with us all night with her rain and lightnin' bolts. Stay tuned for the pics.
May you all have a good day
