How many of you would have this done? Not me. This is just another step toward getting acceptance for this type of marking. Then, one day in the future, someone will come along and require that it be done to buy and sell anything. That person will be the Beast described in the Book of Revelation. I will never consent to having anything implanted in my body. I think the AMA underestimates the number of people who will be resistant to such measures for religious reasons.

Prolly some little sneaky dr. somewhere will try to "sneak" one in us while they working on us... All it would take would be one little slip up that no one would notice and then when you all sewed up, guess what... TAG your it.:smt118

The headline is a little misleading. The AMA basically acknowledged their use and approved it, but that's not really a "plan" to put them into everyone. It's an available option.
I could see it being very useful in the case of comatose patients or those with severe disabilities who cannot communicate. I'm thinking of people who are brought in off the streets who turn out to have long medical histories. The time saved in trying to locate relatives or medical records could save some lives.
Actually, the best use I can think of (and this is already being done with some caskets, I think) would be to implant them in the bones of buried bodies so that in the event of another disaster the dead can easily be identified and returned to their resting places.

The only legitimate use for living people would be for people with some form of dementia. My aunt's mother in law was found blocks from home in her nightgown once. That sort of thing.

That was the kind of thing I had in mind. I remember a man walked away from his nursing home when I lived in Florida and it took a couple of days to locate him and positively ID him. In cases like that, missing medication or being given the wrong one while the hospital tries to find out who you are and what your history is could be really bad. Otherwise, I really don't see them being a necessity.

Chip implants have garnered much discussion in the last few years. It is also a hot topic in cattle farming and in a way that could destroy the Mom & Pop industry if passed.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3697940.stmSomebody's gonna wind up cutting that guy's arm off just so they can have free drinks and access to the VIP lounge. I'd be worried about the same thing for medical purposes - some sick homeless guy would cut off somebody's arm and eat it so he could go to the ER for treatment of whatever ails him.
