In response to the tragedy at Virginia Tech, the Nevada Board of Regents (like the IHL here), think it might be a good idea to send professors through the standard police academy so they could then be POST certified and legally able to carry a gun on college campuses.

A university system regent is proposing arming and deputizing employees within the higher education system so they could respond with force should a Virginia Tech-like incident occur on a campus.
Regent Stavros Anthony, a Las Vegas police captain, said he will propose to regents in June allowing any employee, "whether it's the president, a faculty member (or) the maintenance guy," to become reserve police officers within their respective police departments.
"From my standpoint, I see this as kind of a win-win," Anthony said. "You're allowing institution employees to step up to the plate and say, 'I'm for standing up and defending our institution.'"
The proposal is receiving support from leaders within the Nevada System of Higher Education. Chancellor Jim Rogers endorsed the proposal, and Anthony said University of Nevada, Las Vegas Police Chief Jose Elique was enthusiastic about it....
I don't imagine many college professors WANT to carry guns and be expected to use them in the event of a violent attack. They're college professors. Something tells me that when they were deciding on a career path, they didn't spend much time considering the pros and cons of law enforcement.

it would be a better idea for colleges to invest in more efficient law enforcement... trained snipers and swat teams.... tuition would go up... then students would have to decide if they would rather live or go to college... or they could mentally screen all applicants... keep medical records, mental health history, that way they know who to keep a closer eye on...

What if it isn't a student that is doing the shooting?

they mentally screen all their employees... so that rules out administration to the janitors... but the students... i have never heard of a situation of such measures being taken...

Here are the NV POST physical fitness requirements:
Academy Entrance
One and one-half mile run: 20 minutes 20 seconds or less
Minimum number of situps: 13
Minimum number of pushups: 15
Vertical jump: 12 inches
300 meter sprint: 89 seconds or less
The physical fitness standards at completion of academy are as follows:
One and one-half mile run: 17 minutes 17 seconds or less
Minimum number of situps: 15
minimum number of pushups: 18
Vertical jump: 14 inches
300 meter sprint: 77 seconds or less
I wonder how many college professors could meet those requirements (and as an aside, I really want to say that when the Xboy went through the academy in '97, he had to complete the run in under 15 minutes. I have some rather unpleasant memories of us running the hills trying to get *my* time down--wth? I wasn't going through the academy ).
Not to mention the psych eval...

sounds like a dumb idea to me
main reason being that professors are notoriously left wing hippie types
im pretty sure if you would give them a gun, they would carry it like a girl carries a rat

NV is a little different. Even at the universities but more so at the community colleges, it's a different world. Vegas does not define the rest of the state, where you have a mostly libertarian mind-set that tends to the conservative. Nevada allows prostitution and gambling because they don't want the federal government to tell them what they can and can't do. It really is kind of an odd place.

I'm saying that most of NV is ranchland and mining communities. There are two universities in the system, 1 college, and four community colleges. It reflects to a great deal the local population...at least in the community colleges. I mean...who wants to go live in Winnemucca or Elko, NV?

It's a stupid idea.
The obvious solution is to let any American legally allowed to own a gun carry one if they choose to. Problem solved.
I don't understand why so many leftists spend so much time & energy on convoluted schemes trying to find a way to defend everyone, while carefully keeping a blind eye on the second amendment.

Not my call, but I think it's a real bad idea to arm professors. I think it's over reacting. I'd much rather have a trained police force on campus to do more than carry guns in case some sniper decides to start shooting. I mean real cops. University of Nevada Police. Captain, officers guns. How many of these type incidents have we had? Texas, West Virginia..............in how many years? Best to arm postal employees. Just my opinion.

I think this is dumb. (I've not read ahead in the thread, so please excuse me if someone has already said this). Its silly, and dangerous, to require someone that doesn't want to carry a weapon (for what ever reason) to do so. It doesn't make sense to give some 'nervous nellie' a handgun, and expect them to a) have the wits to decide if the situation warrants using it and b) commit to doing it if for some reason they decide they need to. Sounds like a good chance for someone to get shot with their own weapon.
I'm for the right to bear arms, responsibly and with training. This doesn't sound responsible to me. Just my 2 cents...

Well, I wish I had checked available flights BEFORE I packed my bag. American Airlines doesn't fly into either city.:smt118

That's why they're not expensive in those locales. Can't vouch for what you're going to get either. Some of those girls (used loosely) have lived long, hard lives. :smt118

I bet Shelby Thames is sighing relief that they aren't considering that in MS. I know about half a dozen unstable USM faculty that I sure don't want to see with a gun. One USM faculty member has already been involved in a shooting at Canebreak.
And you know what, he still has a job.
