But you may have to wait in line for the lunch bunch - I believe Guru's been waiting a month for admittance. Good luck! :)
This is the second time I've seen you post this, but this does not agree with the correspondence I've had with Guru.

However, as of 6-4 the comments you made did not agree with the correspondence I've had with Guru.

Whatever. You said he "has" (Guru's = Guru has), not he "had" waited a month. Present tense versus past tense. 2 days after he posted that he was invited. I don't see what the point is that you're trying to make, almost a month after he was invited. What is your point? Why is this so much of an issue it had to be posted twice?

i'll have to come check it out, ynotme! i have been craving fresh tomatoes and cucumbers for the last month!
my mom gave me a few homegrown cucumbers and one big fat juicy homegrown tomato and i took them to work and could hardly wait for lunch when I slice all of it up, put salt on 'em, and ate all of it for my lunch! i wouldn't even share with my boss. :)

I'm going to paste them all over tarnation to give Mr. Mayor something to do. Danged if I'm putting them where they'll get lost in Off-Topic.

Hawk I was going to rep you but I have to spread it around. I don't understand...cause it has been days since I repped anyone. So does it mean I can not rep anyone, cause I've used them up or is just Hawk and that I have to give to someone else? I don't think he was my last rep. I don't understand!

Honestly aaron, there are groups and forums on here that have practically no traffic, yet you have a problem with a special catagory for "country living" which would be a guaranteed high traffic area. I just don't get it, other than it appears to be hard-headed vendictiveness on your and certain other's part. It comes across as pure discrimination to us senior citizens, of which, we are many. And, there are many younger folks who seem interested in their elders hard earned wisdom.
We just had a forum restructuring based on traffic, I don't think this gardening forum was mentioned. I don't know which forums you are talking about that have no traffic. There are groups that have little traffic, but I'm not going to create a group for someone and then take it away without them requesting to do so.
There simply needs to be more topics, made by more people than you and a couple of others on gardening and recipes. If I made the forum right now, I don't think I could find more than 200 posts that I could put in that forum.

Not to be argumentative or anything, but I'm interested in this kind of forum as well. I do remember several requests for a forum of this type when you asked what kind of forums we'd like to see, so this isn't really an out-of-the-blue request from Hawkeye or anyone else.

I like the idea of country living/gardening posts too. :)

Ya made one for outdoors and I gaurantee you a country living forum would draw as much or more. The request was made and seconded, then quickly shot down without merit. In fact, it was thirded and fourthed.
Don't play dumb. When I say something will work, it does.
I'm just saying I didn't see it. I just looked back through the forum structure thread, and while I see requests for travel, parenting, and local recreation, I don't see a request for a gardening or a country living forum.
Nevertheless, I am going to be moving outdoors under Sports again because it's not getting a high amount of traffic. I'll post a poll with all 4 forum suggestions and the one with the highest number of votes will get that spot.

It's only one, because I don't want the forum structure to get out of control. I get requests all the time for different things here because people want it to be their web site, not everyone's. I don't see the same amount of activity that you and Hawkeye see.

I feel like you have us tuned out and the blind is leading the blind.
The best part about that is, you can still post your topics, whether I take action on this or not. The forum that you posted gardening topics in when you joined the forum is still here.

:smt102 Frustrated again!
I just don't understand this battle....and why just only one! I know you are the owner and I totally respect that and you should have it your way just Help me understand Aaron. You are offering a forum for the community, is it for the masses only....does a small, rarely used forum cause problems on a server? :smt102
:smt102 Why not lots of them?....large or small. I just don't understand why it has to have a large out cry....if in the end it proves to be futile it can be deleted.
I know I am a newbie and my wants don't matter, and also that I have NOTHING invested here....meaning my life don't evolve around My Hattiesburg Forums....so wither they get a Gardening forum or not wont hurt my feelings but it seems to matter to them a lot.

I think you underestimate the interest of many of the younger set who are finally beginning to realize the importance of becoming more self-suficient and less reliant on the food that use to be safe for them to take for granted.
Not only that, I believe they also are looking for things to do which the whole family can enjoy, together......common everyday things that will one day have great meaning and instill fond memories.
Come down from your cyber skyscraper and try to think in a non-egocentric manner. Get some dirt under your finger nails. You'll be glad you did. Their is much more to life than movies, drinking, sex, politics, war, wierd news, and gaming. My last 2 cents on this subject (in this thread).
Exactamundo. My parents (and grandparents) always had these huge gardens. I hated them at the time. Now we only try to keep up with two 4x8 raised beds. Not a lot of room, and we have no illusions about surviving off of it, but the fruit we get tastes SO much better. While I know its because the sugars don't have time to convert over if you pick and eat the fruit or vegetables fresh, but I also think there is something to be said about enjoying the fruits of your own labor.
And it gets the kids hands dirty. They (like I did) might hate it now, but someday they'll get it.
And we've had problems with a lot of the topics you listed, even in our tiny 4x8 beds.
I know this has nothing to do with winterizing green tomatos....

I hesitate to say anything because when I do, things tend to be about how awful I am, but...
aaron's not saying that he won't create the forum. He's saying that despite the lists of possible topics, there's really not a lot of them being posted. You don't need the organizational structure to post the topics, which is apparently what people are waiting for. It's almost like cutting off their nose to spite their own faces--as in, unless we can do it the way we want to do it, then we're not going to do it at all. :smt102

And it's not just gardening - when people share stories, ideas, tips, recipes, parenting ideas, etc. that have been passed down throughout the generations, we're building a community of Southerners who know about their roots.
It's important to share these stories and ideas. It's important to building a community - even an internet community. It's the common things that bring us together that keep us coming back - not just the games, blogs, and weird news (to use Hawk's words). Aaron, you're missing an opportunity to build the community you say you want AND to have the members influence the direction the site takes, as you often say is the case.
Families, traditions and religion - mixed in with news, politics, and fun is what this community is about, whether this is recognized or not by those who make the decisions.
Even though I have no clue about gardening, it is something that my mama, my dad, my grandparents, and my neighbors did. I loved watching them and helping them pick the veggies... But QM is right... it's the common things that bring us together. I've already related to some ppl on here and love to hear what they have to say, I love the advice. Something like this would be good, especially for me who, again, has no clue about gardening, or cooking or anything. I'd be interested...

And thats being bias to the big numbers. Not fair!

PS: 58ford - try the first post in this thread
I don't concern myself as an admin on whether it's a topic that everyone should be involved in or not. My thoughts on the matter aren't relevant. I concern myself with how popular the topic is. Should these topics be segregated from another forum? I've talked with many forum admins and they say they just look for so many topics being created about something that it drowns the other topics in the forum and no one can find anything about the other topics. Then you want to split it off so that other topics aren't drown out.

I'm an amateur gardener. . . just starting to get my hands dirty and a gardening forum would be a great place to learn the secrets to a bountiful garden. I don't understand why there's all this BS concerning whether or not that forum can be created. I don't think it's threatening to the site but correct me if I'm wrong.
As a member, I'd like to see all the threads about gardening in one specific place so I can browse them easily. . . not thrown throughout the rest of the off topic threads. . . but hey. . . what do I know?

58ford's lazy garden.
Dig a trench a shovel blade deep & 2 blades wide. Zig zag shaped with room to mow around it.
Fill with lawn waste, leaves, fertilizer, compost, etc.
Put the dirt on top.
prinkle fertilizer on top.
Run a length of polyethelyene pipe with holes drilled in it along the trench.
Buy a timer valve at Walmart for about $30.
Add an in line fertilizer dispenser.
Cover the trench with Black landscape plastic. Weight it down around the edges.
Plant your seedlings through holes in the plastic.
Occasionally add miracle grow to the fertilizer dispenser
Largely ignore the garden, but keep an eye out for bugs & neighborhood children. (they get the majority of my crop)
Pick vegetables.

That's MY garden, except it's in an abandoned sandbox, and I used soakerhose instead of a pipe. Also, the plants are growing in sand/soil as opposed to soil/compost.

I've been giving tomatoes away left and right. They haven't been that large, maybe raquet ball size or a tad bit bigger at the largest. But, they've been numerous and good. I've never grown the better boy type before, and am unsure how large they are supposed to be. My roma tomatoes are the right size, and my cherry's, something 100 strain, are good, but a bit smaller than I was expecting.
The cats have stayed out of the sandbox for a while since the plants got so big, but apparently the mixture of the time release fertilizer, the initial MG, and the topsoil I mixed in the sand to give it a light pumice color, have been enough to grow great tomatoes. I'd call the garden a success.
I heard Felder Rushing on the public radio show the other day saying it was time to plant for the fall crop. My tomatoes are starting to get real scant at the bottom, so I may wipe 1/2 - 2/3 of the plants and put some new ones in for the fall crop.
