There used to be a small restaurant in Vicksburg (just at the entrance of the Battlefield) that made the best fried green tomatoes.

Sometimes, when we were visiting family in Jackson, we'd drive over on a Saturday to get tomatoes for lunch! Mighty good eatin'!!

I think it's Mary Mahoney's or it may have been Chappy's on the Coast that had fried green tomatoes with lump crabmeat and crawfish on top. . . now that was some good stuff! :smt118

the first time i tried fried green tomatoes was this past year. my boss had treated me to lunch at crescent city grill, and she ordered some of them. not something i would have tried on my own, but she shared them with me, and they were AWESOME! they had some sort of cream sauce on top that was wonderful!

i always like to go eat w/her since she always orders things i've never tried and has me try them. i've learned that i like some things i never thought i would!

I had some fried maters tonight too. They are sooooo good. I will have to try adding milk to my recipe. I just use salt, pepper, and cornmeal. I always want them the first thing in summer.

There ain't nothing better in the summer. What did you have with them? Or did you just eat a platter of green tomatoes by themselves? LOL

When I have green fried tomatoes all I want is the tomatoes, sliced bread and a big glass of cold milk! Had some today and it was delicious! mmmmm goood! :)

Here's another Green tomato recipe thatI love- and it's healthy. I can gather most of the ingredients quickly out of my kitchen garden.

Dice and mix:

2 large Squash
1 Medium Zucchini
2 Medium Firm Green Tomatoes
I large Vidalia Onion
I Teaspoon minced Garlic
2 small banana peppers
Salt and Pepper to taste

In large cast iron skillet, cover bottom of pan with olive oil ( or bacon drippings). Heat skillet until it is VERY hot. Quickly add all ingredients and stir frequently.

Don't overcook, I like for my veggies to still have the slightest bit of crunch.

Yum!

oh I am craving fried green tomatoes for breakfast now!! haha

I do have a question... and I know, this may sound dumb- so please just humor me and let me know the answer...

okay, green tomatoes- are these just regular red tomatoes that have not ripened? or.... is there actually a seperate type of tomatoe that is a "green tomatoe" and will never turn red? you know, like green and red bell peppers.... do green and red tomatoes exist?

I've gotten several different answers from people.... I figured one of you smart folk could set me straight.

Green tomatoes are the premature red tomatoes.

Walnut Circle Grill has great fried green tomatoes.. My batter always ends up falling off when I try making them. Any idea how to make it stay on?

I'm so proud the harvest is turning you into a group of raging vegetarians, if only for one meal.

I'm going to try to do some green tomatoes, but mess with the recipe a bit to make it a bit more healthful and vegan. I'll post my results and recipe here later on.
