Now that's something I loooooooooove!
My mom made her homemade banana pudding on Sunday night (the kind she does in the double boiler. . . takes forever and is AWESOME), and I missed it! :smt022 She doesn't cook much at all but that's one of her recipes that's my favorite! :smt023
Who else has a good recipe?

HAHAH I might have to do that... but will have to find some good bananas.
Actually, I guess I am opposite of some. I much prefer the easy mixed kind with the cool whip, sweetened condensed milk, pudding, etc.

The family banana pudding goes like this:
2 pkgs of instant vanilla pudding
1-2pkgs of cool whip
Make the pudding to box directions. mix in cool whip. layer pudding/cool whip mix, bananas and wafers in a bowl until satisfied. Eat later.

Elle, I saw St. Paula Deen, patroness of all things wonderful, Southern, and fattening, make one similar to yours. She used the sweetened condensed milk, a package of French Vanilla pudding, Cool Whip or whipped cream, and cream cheese. Lay out one layer of Pepperidge Farm Chessman butter cookies in a 9x13 pan, add a bunch of sliced bananas and top with this mixture. I may have even put a topping of more cool-whip on the top. This is extremely rich, and I left out the cream cheese one time without any harm. The family agreed it was really good, but too rich to have more than once every five years.
These days I cheat and use packaged banana pudding. Mom used to make the cooked custard kind, without meringue and my first MIL made the kind with meringue so I had the best of both worlds!

Oh, and nothing says "breakfast" like a bowl of leftover banana pudding and a big cup of hot coffee.
Hermione

Well, the Chessman cookies are a lot richer than vanilla wafers, which is one thing that made it rich. We had it the first time in lieu of a birthday cake, and it was a big hit.

Best one I ever had is right off the box of Nilla Vanilla Wafers.

Yeah, Mike, that's the one my former MIL made, and it is really good. I make that other one for special occasions, but always come back to the basic vanilla wafer one.

I do believe JMB has gone to make herself a batch of banana pudding to refresh her memory of the recipe! LOL
I wish! I love it but can't eat anything with bananas anymore except for banana bread. I do still make it for the family though. Mom got this recipe from a soldier's wife in Eau Gallie, Florida during WWII.

Banana Pudding
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
pinch of salt
2 Tbs. melted butter
1 beaten egg
2 c. scalded milk
1 tsp. vanilla
vanilla wafers
bananas, sliced
In saucepan, mix flour, sugar, salt; stir in butter. Add egg and stir. Add milk SLOWLY and cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Add vanilla, then arrange in bowl with pudding on bottom, then alternate layers of vanilla wafers, bananas, and pudding, ending with pudding on top. Place a layer of vanilla wafers on top.
