It appears (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070704/NEWS01/70704013) that Beasley Denson has defeated Phillip Martin in the election for chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
However, a complete recount is underway due to the questionable status of some provisional ballots, with official results expected to be announced Thursday.
If Denson prevails, he will have defeated the chief who has led the Mississippi Choctaws since Jimmy Carter was president.
