Getting ice on a cold sore at the first "tingle" makes them heal a lot faster.
One of my boys used to get mouth ulcers a good bit. His pediatrician said to mix equal parts of Maalox and Benadryl and swish it around in the mouth, concentrating on the area of the ulcer. DO NOT SWALLOW IT!

If you get stung by a bee, wasp, hornet, ect. place a penny on the site of the sting. The copper in the penny draws the venom out of the wound & helps with the pain, also.

Not quite (http://www.snopes.com/medical/homecure/beesting.asp). You're better off removing the stinger, then using ice to numb it and antihistamines to reduce the swelling.

Astra, I have friends who have used this method & it works. The only stinger that would have to be removed from the wound would be from a honey bee. They can sting only once because it pulls out some of their innards & they die.

When my husbands family get sick cold/flu they make Cornmeal Soup, it warms the body and settles the stomach.
They swear it cures a cold.
Cornmeal Soup
Mix water and milk half and half and bring to a boil, stir in enough corn meal until it has the medium soup consistency, and add salt and black pepper to taste. Eat it while hot.
PS: you are making about a cup size not a pot/meal.

My mom always used to put bleach on wasp stings. Quick google says it works because wasp stings are acidic and the bleach is basic. However, bee stings are basic, and you need an acidic solution to counteract them.

If you have a child with asthma, cut his finger nails, toe nails, and a lock of hair. Stand him/her by a wooden post and measure 1 inch below his head. Now drill a hole and stuff the hair and nails inside the hole....not sure if you close it or not, but anyway when the child has grown past the hole his/her asthma will be gone.
They did this to my #1 son and well it worked.

Now, THAT'S an old wife's tale!!!
I'm pretty candid about race, and there's a big difference between white old wife's tales and black old wife's tales. I should write a book! Some of the one's some of my employees have told me are just so strange to me, but some of them believe them whole-heartedly.

"Mopping" the throat with methialate was a trick my Granny did. She would make us find a stick and she wrapped a cotton ball around it. She dipped it is the methialate and them swished it around the tonsils.
Gin Raisins are also a good remedy for joint pain. Use white raisins to fill a jar. Fill the jar with gin, covering all the raisins. Keep in the fridge and allow the raisins to swell. Take 2 or 3 everyday to keep pain away.:-D

If you get in a ant bed and have multipal stings, cut an onion in half and rub it directly on the stings. They will not turn red and they will not itch!!!!
Are you sure that wasn't kerosene? My granddad's cure for almost everything was kerosene with a little stovepipe soot mixed in with it. This was for cuts. Later, he graduated to just using blue cow medicine on us. For stings, he spit a big glob of chewing tobacco spit on the sting.
As a kid, hubby's uncle stepped on a bow rake and ran it through his foot. His dad poured kerosene on it. Makes me pucker just thinking about it.

My Mother-in-law always told me this for a wart to cut and rub a potato on it. Then bury it in the backyard under a full moon. I have a feeling it's something about the starch and not really necessary to bury the potato. Just a guess though..;)
When I was a kid, I read my aunt's home remedies book, and it said that menstrual cramps could be relieved by having an orgasm. Might have trouble finding a willing partner under those conditions, but hey, it's good to know, right?
Drinking water and walking help mine.
Okay, I know, 'nuff about menstrual cramps. Sorry.

Now y'all gone get me started.
For wasp stings, chiggers, & mosquito bites use bleach, for bee stings a tobacco poultice.
Grandma's sore throat remedy: Gargle with a shot of lemon juice a couple of times (to strip off pleghm), combine a shot of honey & a shot of bourbon, mix thoroughly, gargle & swallow (the bourbon acts as an analgesic & the honey makes it stick to the throat, as well as making it easier to swallow)
For eye pain from tired eyes or a welding flash apply potato juice.
For nausea eat ginger, picked or otherwise, it cures nausea from hangover, seasickness, food disagreements, motion sickness or any other stomach problems. (I always kept a bottle of gari on the boat)
The bark of the roots of the bayberry tree dried & ground to a powder is useful as a sinus clearing & stimulating snuff, also, brewed into a tea & drunk is a VERY powerful laxative.
The roots of the dandelion with the skin rubbed off & roasted to a pine straw brown color, and brewed makes a tasty & calming soporific.
This one I don't know for a fact works, but I heard it & told it to a friend of mine with bad arthritis. Catch a honey bee & have it sting you on the affected joint, to relieve the stiffness & pain. She swore by it & kept her grand children running the yard catching bees.
Gargle salt water at the beginning of a cold.
Apply a hot rag to a pimple to bring it to a head.
(This one's for the teens) to prevent pimples, mix fuller's earth, (or clay) with water & smear on the face, let dry to draw out skin oil & pore contaminates. It works.
When I played base in a blues band I cut my finger tip, I didn't think I could play that night. The Guitar player took me aside & applied superglue to the cut, not only was I able to play, but the cut healed very quickly.
If an animal has consumed poison, force it to drink hydrogen peroxide, this will force it to throw up.
This last one is a little on the hoo doo side. When my brother was 6 or 7, he heard that some people were "wart witches" meaning that if they touched a wart it would go away in a very short time. He decided that he was a "wart witch". My mother had some friends ovr & my brother proudly announced that he was now a "wart witch". One of my mother's friends said she'd had a wart for years could he get rid of it for her. My bro says, of course & touched the wart. Less than a week later the wart fell off. For several years after that (into his twenties) my brother was sought out to touch people's warts. I'm not saying I believe, but most of the time it actually worked.

Dude, you could'a stetched these out a bit. We have a quota to meet and folks don't usually cotton to lengthy list, circa zorro. :)
Dude, I only got started. I've been studying natural remedies, & wild foods since i was a kid. I just wanted to get a few of the basics out of the ways. You're lucky I didn't get into wild cherry pits, mulberry trees, Jimson weed, various fungus, & the hundreds of uses for pine oil/sap/cones/nuts. and don't EVEN get me started about sassafras.

I experimented with Bloodroot a few years ago. You can't find the stuff locally, or I couldn't. I had to mail order a pound of the stuff from somewhere in Utah. I got a pound of powdered and a pound of roots. It's supposed to remove moles from your body. I've got a few on my neck that I wanted removed.
I made a paste with olive oil and the powedered root and put it on a bandaid over the mole. Later in the day, the mole was so sore and sensative, I had to abandon the project. I'm sure if I'd have left it on, it would have killed the mole an it would have sloughed off.

For sensitive teeth from too much acid, use baking soda to brush your teeth with after you brush with toothpaste.
I had sensitive teeth and mentioned this at the dentist this week. The technician said a lot of people are experiencing this in the summer with tomatoes, fruits (extra acid).
I had been eating lots of Italian food.
Baking Soda is alkaline to counter the acid.

one of my favorites, didn't see this one covered. learned this in 6th grade reading from a story about an indian family. if you get antbites, put a good mud compress on it, it won't hurt as bad. i tried it one time when we were out in the garden and i got ants ALL OVER my feet. stuck 'em down in the mud where the soaker hose had been, and it worked! the bites also didn't get as red and angry.

We used to brush our teeth with a mixture of salt & baking soda when we ran out of toothpaste. It really makes your teeth feel clean!
Most wart remedies work -- there's some thought that there is a psychological component to warts anyway.
Ginger -- or ginger ale, not 7-up or sprite -- really is great for nausea. Tried and true!!
My dad swore by flaxseed poultices, especially to heal a carbuncle or other raised sore. Anybody use these?

Have any of you old timers heard of, or tried, "Joint Juice" for arthritic joints? I have a friend that swears by it and I started drinking it yesterday. 'Sposed to drink an 80z can every morning. He said it started helping him and his wife, pretty fast, but I haven't noticed anything spectacular, yet.
It's a new product on expermental market....can only be found at Wallyworld and Walgreens. I'm going to give it two weeks and see if it helps.
Keep us posted on that.

My Dad claims the stuff mentioned in This (http://community.eons.com/blogs/entry/4893-Arthritis-and-Joint-Pain-Relief-) article 'seems' to help. Neither didn't do any better for me than any number of OTC magic potions that contain a goodly bit of methyl salicylate.

The dark chocolate would probably work for asthma, because of the caffiene. A cup of strong dark coffee can stop an asthma attack in its tracks.
For coughing and sneezing and sore throat, itchy and burning eyes with fever, just chew a piece of Osha root (Porteri`s Loveage) about the size of your thumb. You`ll get relief immediately! It doesn`t grow around here, but grows wild in Colorado. I know personally from first hand experience that the Osha root works!

Hey Mac found this (http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/796_ivy.html)
The rash, blisters and itch normally disappear in 14 to 20 days without any treatment. But few can handle the itch without some relief. For mild cases, wet compresses or soaking in cool water may be effective. Oral antihistamines can also relieve itching.
FDA also considers over-the-counter topical corticosteroids (commonly called hydrocortisones under brand names such as Cortaid and Lanacort) safe and effective for temporary relief of itching associated with poison ivy.
For severe cases, prescription topical corticosteroid drugs can halt the reaction, but only if treatment begins within a few hours of exposure. "After the blisters form, the [topical] steroid isn't going to do much," says Epstein. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people who have had severe reactions in the past should contact a dermatologist as soon as possible after a new exposure.
Severe reactions can be treated with prescription oral corticosteroids. Phillip M. Williford, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology, Wake Forest University, prescribes oral corticosteroids if the rash is on the face, genitals, or covers more than 30 percent of the body. The drug must be taken for at least 14 days, and preferably over a three-week period, says FDA's Ko. Shorter courses of treatment, he warns, will cause a rebound with an even more severe rash.
There are a number of OTC products to help dry up the oozing blisters, including:
aluminum acetate (Burrows solution)
baking soda
Aveeno (oatmeal bath)
aluminum hydroxide gel
calamine
kaolin
zinc acetate
zinc carbonate
zinc oxide Desensitization, vaccines, and barrier creams have been studied over the last several decades for their potential to protect against poison ivy reactions, but none have been approved by FDA for this purpose.
