I had a neighbor in Picayune who had persimmon trees..they were ooooh so good....persimmon bread is wonderful! When I was in scouts and we would go camping in the fall, if we came upon a wild persimmon tree I would send the kids skinny up to pick me a big bunch...they were a little sour even when ripe but they sure were good cooked in bread.

Hawk, that recipe sounds just like the one I have except I don't remember the egg white being in it...although it could have been...I havn't made persimmon bread since the early 90's. If you have extras, let me know I wouldn't mind getting a couple from you. You done got me hankerin for some now! :) It is ooooh so good

Hawk, I love Japanese Persimmons. My grandma used to have a tree and they are so preety and orange. Have to wait until they get ripe and clear or they are not as sweet to me.

Yummy. Let me know if you have some xtra.

There used to be a persimmon tree right beside the road on S. 20th Ave. I'd ride my bike up 20th to F.B. Woodley Elementary school. The persimmons would ripen and fall in the street, where cars would run over them. The odor of mashed, sun heated, rotting persimmons sure took the desire for persimmons away from me. Actually, though, I've never tried one.

Persimmons are great. My grandparents have a couple of trees and we grew up eating those just like we did the plums or peaches or pears. Just be very sure that you try one after it's ripe... not even halfway ripe...

Check it out! I'll be trying this one when they get ripe.

Persimmon Bread

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup oil
2 egg whites
1 egg yoke
1 cup persimmon
1 cup chopped nuts
1cup raisens
1 tsp Vanilla
2-1/2 cups Plain Flour
1 tsp Baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Allspice, ground
1/2 tsp Cloves, ground

Mix sugar and oil, add egg whites and yoke, beat well. add persimmon (peeled, deseeded, mashed), raisens, nuts, vanilla, and spices. Mix well. Add flour, soda, and salt. Pour into 2 greased and lightly floured loaf pans and bake at 350.

Living off the land as much as possible is cool, man! :smt040

Hawk,
That bread sounds wonderful! Please count me in for as many as you can spare. :)

This is my Jap P'simmon tree. I will have more than plenty to share. They are now a little bigger than golf balls, and will be as big a baseballs when ripe. The limbs are hanging heavy with fruit. I've never seen it make so many as this year.

Ok, but this is for people that do eat em or try 'em.

Wait until the persimmon is almost transparent or transluscent. Kinda mushy or soft to touch. When you eat it when it is ripe, it is clear orange inside and the texture is not as fibery to me.

Hawkeye, correct me if I am leading anyone astray, please.

We used to get them from my Mama's in South Mississippi and take them back to Tippah County. Neighbors didn''t know what they were.

We would set them out on the counter and let them ripen up.
