I've always wanted a farm, but I've run into three problems:
1. No Land
2. No Knowledge of Raising Farm Animals
3. Too Soft-hearted to kill an animal
And...oh yeah....#4 too much work.....but they look fun!

How'ed you like them blue or green eggs I gave ya several weeks back? Brings a true meaning to green eggs and ham don't it?

Ok? no brown eggs? hmmmmm, I don't know why. Guess I used them all....Sorry!
My mother has always had a yard full of yard birds-- mostly chickens, but there's usually a pair of geese, some guineas, etc. When I was a kid I used to go get the eggs every morning, and loved looking forward to newly hatched chicks. Until I went to college, I don't think I'd ever eaten a store-bought egg. We killed the roosters for food, but usually kept the hens for eggs. To this day I prefer those brown eggs. My mom still has a few chickens-- probably a dozen or so. We used to have lots more than that. I guess it's because I grew up around them, but there's something comforting about them to me. I'd have some of my own if I didn't live in the city limits.

My grandparents on both sides had them. I remember Bannys--beautiful feathers and lots of oyster shells.
I never gathered the eggs, but ate a lot of them.
I remember my Mom saying how you had to watch for chicken snakes and how to watch out for 'em.

Riding a bike through the neighborhoods of Petal and Hattiesburg, I'm surprised by the number of chickens I could hear in the morning hours. There are a fair amount of people keeping them. I've been told that it's mostly the 'Mexicans', but I"m sure there are some natives keeping the birds, too.
I guess I can see the appeal of watching a yard full of chickens run around. I had a run in with a mean rooster or two when I was 3 and 4. I still remember that rooster. He was 1/2 my size at the time, and scary. Imagine a rooster the size of a great dane coming at you now, and that's how I felt then.

I had that same experience more than once! My mom used to keep the roosters in a pen so we wouldn't get attacked by them. The first time one got me, my mother was trying to catch a chicken that had gotten out of the pen and she asked me to stand in front of the door to the pen and block it but hold it open. The meanest rooster of all time was still inside the pen. He came after me and I took out across the yard. About every four steps, I'd feel those spurs catch the backs of my legs.
I was only about 4 years old then, so I was horrified. Once I'd had 2 or 3 of them come after me, I got to where I'd just kick them across the yard as soon as they got within reach.

I've got A (one) chicken and 2 roosters. Will have to post pics of my coop and chickens later though - none at work. I need to get rid of one of my roosters (but just can't do the deed).

Yes you do or your old girl will get poked to death. I had dis problem once wif too many roos per hen and they did literly screwed one old girl to death. I shot the last one dead as he was trying to peg her cold dead corpse. He was a perverted old fool, anyway. One alpha roo and a real young one is all dat you need for a dozen layers. And, de only reason to keep a young one around is to take over if something happens to the alpha roo. A dominate Rooster will stand his ground to a hungry coyote if his girls are threatened and he usually loses.
That's what I'm afraid of. Wanna come over and shoot one for me? :)

Sheet girl..toughen up! Won't dat Butterball do the deed for ya?
I AIN'T killing no animals. :( I raised these 3 from chicks and I sure can't look them in the eye and snuff 'em. Butterball's not going to do it either. My 8 year old son would never forgive us for killing his rooster.

Free cycle? Never heard of this, but if it gives my poor chicken a break - I'm willing to listen.

We had banny chickens and roosters when I was really young. I remember gathering the eggs in the morning. One of the roosters we had would charge at me and I would run. I was 4 or 5 at the time. I did this until I saw it charge my Dad and my dad stomped his foot at the rooster and he fled like nobody's business. I felt then I had a secret weapon to pull out if that rooster gave me trouble again.

Freecycle is a great thing. I've seen roosters come through on some of the listings before and are usually taken pretty fast.
I hear ya, mac. The country is a'calling you! Put a down payment on dat country acre wif no damn codes.
You're right-- it is calling! We've seriously discussed building a house on some land somewhere. We have about 18 acres in Cov. County, but are afraid that if we build our "dream" house there, we would never, ever be able to move if we needed to because nobody in that area would buy that house. We're unsure about buying more property elsewhere and building on it, because we don't know if we can really keep that much property up. We want to have a baby in the next couple of years, and...well I guess it boils down to the fact that we're just not there yet.
It's in our future though, we hope.
WOW This was my 799th post!
