I saw an unusual thing and don't know what it meant.

I was at $$$$ General out on Old Hwy 11 and noticed a hawk on the power line with a small bird on each side on the line.

Also, 3 small birds were perched on the lines ahead of them.

The birds on the side of the hawk would take turns and fly back and forth and then directly into the hawk's face space. This went on for a few minutes. The hawk sat there like a statue until he flew at an angle downward. All five birds accompanied him like bodyguards.

I thought hawks ate birds.

I mentioned this to the lady there and she said they were all pals, the hawk and the birds.

Since then, I have noticed hawks have 2-3 birds flying with them.

What happened and has someone ever seen this????????

Interesting. Really. I know a Mockingbird can be meaner'n a snake if you get near it's nest.

Daisy I think the smaller birds probably have a nest somewhere in the vicinity. I see the same thing here around my house on a regular basis. Usually the smaller birds are mockingbirds. They probably figure if there are several of them ganging up on the hawk he will have less of a chance to get them...if the hawk takes after one of the birds I have seen the others fly in and distract the hawk. They are surely interesting to watch.
