I've always wanted to try brewing my own beer. Seems like I always have too much going on to really try it. Has anyone out there tried it? How did it turn out?

My old man (Whom incidentally lives in Purvis) makes his own wine and has dabbled in beer a few times.

He enjoyed it but beer is one of those things that is more effort than its worth on a home basis.

Wine is much more 'fruitful' if you will...basically more drunk for the same space and effort.

I do wine myself, I'm not that into beer & it costs a bit to purchase the right set up. I can have you makin' decent wine with equipment you make yourself for nothin'.

Oh, speaking of wine....what's the deal with muscadine wine? No offense if you like it, but I tried some, and I'm thinking its an acquired taste? Is that how it is, or did I just managed to get the worst bottle on the shelf? :smt102

Muscadine wine can vary greatly in flavor & texture you might want to try a few different varieties before you throw the baby out w/ the bathwater. I personally am not a fan, I prefer heavy reds like cabernet, & burgundy, but I know a lot of folks that love the Muscadine.

Try some Sweet Magnolia, just don't eat any greasy chicken with it. It doesn't taste good comin' back up with chunks in it.:repuke:

Buddy of mine made some plum wine the other day. He put it in the freezer for about 36 hours cuz' he forgot about it. It didn't freeze up. Matter of fact it didn't even get jellowy (is jellowy a word?) anyway that was only bout the 3rd or 4th time I have ever drank somethin' that was homemade. Every other time it has been moonshine. That stuff will kill ya' too. Gave me the squirts.

granted...beer does make quicker than wine...but man...youre constantly making beer if youre a big beer drinker

at any rate...i think the old man just likes wine better

My brother made a stove top still for making brandy out of his wine that didn't turn out so well. (waste not want not as far as alcohol goes) He made it out of an old pressure cooker, some copper tubing, a five gallon bucket filled with ice & salt & various plumbing fittings. Thing to remember about distilling is the first thing that comes out of the still is PURE alcohol.you have to wait a while for the yummy fruit esters & water to still out & make something worth drinking. That pure alcohol will dang near take the enamel off your teeth.

Do they make a PoPeil's home brewery? You can just "set it and forget it."

I've tried Jell-O & everclear alone but it won't gel, we ended up eating it with spoons.

We make stuff, my father-in-law and I. As a matter of fact, we were seriously looking into opening up a 'legal' still. Yes, it is now legal to make moonshine in Mississippi, IF you follow THEIR guidelines.

You've got to be licensed, you got to have the still in a specific location, cannot be your yard or house. You got to met certain Fed reg's and other state reg's, mainly that over a like 70 or 90 percent of the ingredients have to have come from within the state of Mississippi, i.e., your corn, ect. The license is like $100, and you can make like 10,000 gallons a year. But here's the catch.

Once you get licensed, you cannot produce until a liquor store requests some of you stuff, which has to be an approved bottle, with an approved label. So, get your own ABC license, open a store, and sell your own stuff by requesting it through the state ABC. That's the short of it.

Trust me, I've done my homework. Be we are still thinking of doing it, just to thumb our noses at certain people.

I've been looking for a new hobby, and this is one I've considered. The only problem is that I don't know anyone else who's already doing it from which to learn. I'd really like to try it out, though.

Well, I'd still rather assist someone else a few times before I attempt it myself.

This, incidentally, is why I haven't yet taken up golf. I don't want to buy a set of left-handed clubs until I know that I want to play, but I haven't played cause I can't find anyone with left-handed clubs.

Bite me.

You should take up brewing again so I may learn from you. Also, we can eat steak and drink more beer in the process.

It's a very tempting offer. I'll have to convince the Mrs. to approve the purchase, but let me see what I can do...

It's a shame you're not selling Toyotas.

It's okay, though; we'll just wait three weeks. By then you'll have another job somewhere else.

Yes, and we use them occasionally.

I think we can commandeer one bathtub. I'll find the storage space, or we'll have a myhattiesburg giveaway.

I hear the Chinese Cherry will be coming to America, soon. As I've long predicted, the Chinese plan to dominate the global auto market within 10 years or less. Crysler just signed a pact to maket the Cherry under Crysler's name in America for around $10,000, which is about twice what is charged for the Cherry anywhere else in the world.

So Carguy, be on the look out for that Cherry job. They'll sell good, I expect.

I had a Chinese motorcycle once, a 2 speed diesel with a pull starter, literally you had to heat the motor up with a blow torch & pull a rope to start it.
it was a piece of junk, I spent more time workin' on that thing than an AMC Harley i made the mistake of buying.

Does anyone know whether the local water utilities use elemental chlorine or chloramine as the disinfectant?
