View Full Version : MH Stock Market Game

We are starting a competition among My Hattiesburg members to play the stock market for the next few months. You start out with $100,000 and can buy/sell any stocks you would like. On October 1st, when the game ends, the winner is whoever has the most equity in their account adding cash and stocks in their account.
You can create an account at the Virtual Stock Exchange (http://vse.marketwatch.com/Game/Homepage.aspx). After creating an account, you can join our competition by clicking "Find a game to join" and typing in myhattiesburg. Or after creating an account, you can just click this link:
http://vse.marketwatch.com/Game/StartViewGame.aspx?id=myhattiesburg
The password to enter is bagels.
At it's simplest form, this game is just buying and selling stocks. You may want to just buy a few stocks with all your money and keep them for the entire period, this would not only be fine, but you could win. That's the great thing about the stock market, buying/selling on a daily basis can work against you in many situations. Pick some of your favorite companies that you may shop or buy from everyday and see how they do. This is not only a game, but a learning experience on how the stock market works.
For those that really want to get into the specifics of the game, here are some of the other rules of the game:
<!-- end _CanUserJoinPanel --> <table class="gameoverview blackheaders thalignleft" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><th>Starting Cash:

The game begins on Monday, July 23rd, so please create your account between now and Monday. It will end on October 1st.

We have 9 members signed up now and endofthetrail is still trying. The more, the marrier. Join in this game; you might learn something and you might teach us a thing or two. There's no better way to learn than getting your feet wet, unless it's getting them wet without drowning.
LOL, if I'd held Google and not sold today before close on my virtual day-trade demo, I'd be down $15,000 rat now. :smt118

I am in too. I have no idea about trading stocks but I think this can be a wonderful learning experience. Thanks for making this site. Will this be put into the "groups" section? Cool, I get to play the market. Thanks again, this should be very interesting.

I'm going to try it. I used to do pretty good with the Hollywood Stock Exchange, but I don't know how I'll do with real businesses.
I think it would be interesting if some one took the stock page and threw darts at it for daily buys and sells to see how well they do! log in as Darts.
Any one get the WSJ?

I'm not sure that oil stocks are going to grow fast enough to give anyone an edge here. That stock may go up 10% in the next couple of months, but 110,000 probably won't win this competition. At least, I hope it won't.
This starts Monday the 23rd. Can we make our picks right after midnight?
This email from the game site answered my question.
Hello players of the My Hattiesburg,
The game will start on the next trading day 7/23/2007 12:00:00 AM. If you would like to get a head start you can make market open trades to start as soon as your game starts.

You should be able to keep up with it though through limit orders. I would always have some cash on-hand for good buys that I may see. The urge is to spend everything right now, but that's not always the best course of action unless you really have a stock pick that you believe it. It's going to be very possible to enter the game a month late and still win.

Maybe if we talked some about what we were thinking or looked at when we decided to get some of the stocks we picked...maybe that would help make this a learning experience?
Two stocks I picked are CROX (crocks), due to the popularity of the shoes and a good PE ratio, and Apple, mostly because like Ford, I think the iPhone is going to make some bux.
The two others are ones I picked mostly because they were on Kramer's buy list. One is a big loser for me so far, because by the time my order made it in, the thing was at its high for the day, and has pulled back a bit (even though its still up so far). I've put in a stop order so I won't get bit much more by it.

aaron
07-23-2007, 02:14 PM
Well, I know they can only sell it for what people bid on it at. If you had a stock like Enron that was falling rapidly, and you put a stop order for $20, but no one wanted to buy it at that, then they would sell it at the price it was being bid at when it went under $20. If that is $10, then it's $10.

Yeah, and they need ore! I am lookin' into the copper thing. Peru Copper just got bought by the chinese......I don't know what to expect though in some of the metal markets. After the W backed the unions and they shut down a couple of years back steel went from about .20 cents/lb. to now around .50-60 cents/lb. This hurt small manufactures and alot of companies that wanted to retro fit couldn't because of the frikken' material prices...it has leveled off somewhat though I think mainly because of oil exploration. Oh yeah the war had alot to do with it back then too. Gubment started buyin' up all the steel so the prices shot up. The union folks sort of had an Ace card to play back then.

It should, but with this website's lag factor, if you had pending market orders they may go ahead and transact as the MM's settle the days' books.
I got a little cash on a spanish cigarette maker! Maybe....just maybe....ALTDF it's still pending.
How do I know if I actually got the stock bought after trying? Boy, I am lost on this but want to learn how to do this really bad. I am going to read the rules and if I can't figure it out I am going to call no-way and see if he can talk my ignorant butt through this. I think it will be fun once I get it figured out. Am I suppose to spend all my money on stocks the first day? See I told you I am confused.

Well my ALTDF stock purchase expired for some reason. It never would go through and I had it set on limit. Which it was 68 bucks and was rising, guess it didn't make it to 70. I dunno. Yeah, I am gonna sell of GNI is it gets anywher even close to what it was. I dunno. I just sort of picked it to get started and see what this was all about.

I have a limit order in on Con Edison (ED) if it ever gets down to $44.90. What do you think?
