It happened in 2000. The Harry Potter books, a once in a lifetime publishing phenomenon, were dominating the bestseller lists, with three titles ensconced in the Top 15 at the same time. It just wasn't fair, moaned publishers of more serious fiction. It kept more deserving titles off the [...]http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/easybakeweblogs/~3/136377104/1636 (http://feeds.feedburner.com/%7Er/easybakeweblogs/%7E3/136377104/1636)

This is the same newspaper which printed a review containing spoilers prior to the book's release on Saturday, and then got snarky when readers and J.K. Rowling herself complained.

I doubt the NYT is powerful enough to untrack the book. It already has enough followers to outsell most books. J.K. will smile all the way to the bank.

Yeah, I don't think Rowling is going to give a care either way. She's making dough hand over fist without the acknowledgment, so po on them. :) I've just started reading the last HP book, I may be able to finish it by Christmas. LOL.

She felt like it was a mean-spirited thing for them to do. JK has always been very kind towards her fans, does a lot of benefit signings, and things like that. Of course she doesn't care for her own sake, but she cared very much for her fans' sakes. Plus, the NYT response was not at all sorry, sort of a "too bad, sorry you don't like it." Not that I'm much of a NYT fan anyway.

I've never taken much stock in "bestseller" lists anyway. It's all a matter of perspective. However, if her books are outselling everyone elses, then I don't see how they can honestly say that they have the TRUE bestseller list.

My last comment was unclear. Most fans and Rowling are much more upset about the NYT publishing a spoiler book review than they are about the list deal, and are also upset over the NYT's ugly attitude when readers complained.

:smt118 LOL. I've been keeping away from anything Potter related. I've started the book and haven't seen the new movie either. So I'm trying desperately to keep away from anything that may spoil them for me. Butterball hasn't seen any of the HP movies so I'm trying to get him caught up so we can go see the new one before the kids get back.

Quite honestly, how much of the NYT's review was a "spoiler"? Not having read since book four but having read all of the hype surrounding book seven, it seems like most of what the NYT's writer said was kind of along the lines of, "well...duh."
