Can anyone recommend a good place for music lessons, specifically keyboard lessons? Guitar instruction wouldn't hurt either if our oldest ever decides to pick up his guitar again. What are the going rates here?

How much? I've been thinking of getting a cheap accoustic and trying to teach myself.
PM me if you don't want to post your rates. Also let me know what city you live in as well.

Are there any piano teachers that will come to your house to teach? We have a piano, but not much time to "go" somewhere to get lessons.

call wolfgang. they generally have a running list of most of the piano teachers in the area, in addition to the ones i'd assume they have on staff.

Junior has been slacking off a bit lately but since he got an electric guitar for Christmas ( what WAS Santa thinking?? ) he shows a bit more interest again.

Speaking of instruments....anyone know where I might find a trumpet for a reasonable price? My oldest is starting band this year. :) I'm such a proud parent. (Considering I spent my school years in the band too.)

Thanks Cubby & Dasmybaby! Here's an easier question for someone...what kind of trumpet should I be looking for a student? I played woodwind, don't have a clue as to brass.

yamaha makes a good one. do NOT i repeat DO NOT!!! buy one from a store where you can also buy eggs, drawers, and an oil change. MS Music will not work on them because of the quality of the instrument.

Well, seeing how I played trumpet.... Yamaha makes a really good beginner model. I played one of those from 6th grade through the first half of 9th grade. As the student progresses, you will probably need to get a more advanced instrument.... in that range, the standard quality is a Bach Stradavarius. Both these instruments can be purchased at Mississippi Music.

I teach with a mallet... jus ax my students.:smt103
There are too methods learning that will ensure knowledge is retained.
1. Trauma...(ei>... Hurt like hell didn't it? Bet you won't do that no more)
2. Repitition.... Keep sayin it over and over... it will be like a bad song... they just can't get it out of their head.

trauma has come into play in one of my lessons. i've oft threatened to break fingers for playing with incorrect technique. i swatted a finger with a drumstick one day and accidentally broke it!!!

you can also check with the Music Dept. here on campus at USM - i know they give private lessons if their schedule allows....i was taking a piano class and my teacher had mentioned it....the number for the department is (601) 266 - 5543
I have a really nice wooden clarinet I might be willing to sell if a band director or music teacher knew a student who would get some use out of it. It's not a beginner model though. My mother paid a nice chunk of change for it 15 years ago.

Mississippi Music? Isn't that Bix Johnson's place? Used to be Johnson's Music downtown in the 60's? Now it sits on Hardy set back a bit?

That's an idea. I've been looking for a hobby. I might take piano. Never too old to learn. I may be too inept, but not too old. On second thought, maybe I'll take tuba lessons and get rid of that S.O.B. next door.:smt023
