Anyone on here ever done it? know how much they pay you? is it much more painful than donating blood? I know it takes longer... but is the pain worse?

I used to donate platelets...haven't in awhile because of new tattoos and low iron. I never did it for money (although one of the guys that I work with says that he pays his utility bills every month by donating).
I don't know that it was exactly painful, but I didn't like it at all (kept doing it though because I had a really high platelet count and I kept thinking, what if I or someone I love needs it and there's no one to do it?). When the anti-coagulant went back in, I got horrible chills (the heating pad was always set on the highest setting and I was covered in blankets) and it felt like everything inside of me was contracting, which come to think of it, was kinda painful. My lips got numb too. It took about 2.5 hours to do it.
I should probably go by and see if I'm good to go again. I'm feeling a little guilty right about now.

well, I know my intentions are wrong.... but, I'm not only at $0 in the bank, I'm overdrawn. I don't know how in the world I'll pay the power bill due this week. Luckily I get paid on Friday.... but, I'm brainstorming of what I could possibly do until then.

Mow the dirty carboy's lawn? If I were you, I'd negotiate for the hosing down at the "after party".

Giving plasma the first time in a week is 20 dollars and the second time that week is 30 so you can make 50 bucks a week doing it. I have known many people who have done this for extra cash and a great friend worked there and It's safe. I suggest you make an appointment for a physical exam which is necessary to give. This can end up being a 5 hour day or more if you don't plan your first visit. Oh by the way who is your electric company? Many can work with you and will be happy to do so.I'd talk to my bank and try and work out a resolution where this is a lesson and you don't dig a hole for yourself. They can be very understanding especially to young college age people.

I am currently donating plasma for cash. If you can give blood you can handle the plasma. (It is easier) good cash though. I got 75 dollars doing it twice in the first week. You just have to remember that you have to make an appointment for your first visit cause it takes about 3 hours. They will give you a physical and make sure you are good to donate. After that it takes a little over an hour. Check it out
I don't even want to think about how big that needle must be. The first time I donated blood I almost got up and left when I saw the needle. They said it has to be big so as not to damage the something or other in the blood. It takes me more than half an hour to give a pint of blood because it just won't come out for some reason-- I wonder if it would take all day to give plasma.

Isn't that called, "selling"?

yeah it would be called selling, but i guess it makes everyone feel like less of a bum to say donate

I never look at the needle. I just don't want to think about it. I have a hard enough time because while I have good veins, they're buried deep and they like to roll. Which means occasionally, they have to do a little digging. The less I know about that, the better.

go for it!! It's safe.
The needles are very big...16 gauge i think
They take blood, replace it with saline, then take out the white thru centrifuge and put back the red. then repeat the process.
The only bad thing that can happen is scar tissue on your arm from donating twice a week.
I think they pay more for the very first donation to get you started.
I'd certainly do it if i was broke

Lips, I see nothing wrong with it since plasma is used for a lot of good things. And you are compensated for your time and gas.
I have been behind on my power bill or doubled up and paid it all one month. Unless there is a disconnect notice, you ought to be ok. Just call their !-800# from in the phone book and talk to them.
They are good to work with you.Talk to your bank and see if they will work with you.
Are you getting paid for your internship, I guess you are.
When I was in grad school, I picked up extra $$$ by running a professional's daughter to school every morning and fixing the child breakfast. I think I met the mom in a summer grad class and she approached me for the year. It helped along with the assistantship.
I think USM placement bureau or career center usually has little part-time or odd jobs posted or call USM CAREER CENTER.
Good Luck.

Giving plasma the first time is $20. I tried donating but am a bad stick. You do get compensated for your time just like when you serve on jury duty. There is such a negative stigma attached to donating plasma which is just crazy. Plasma goes to make medicines for patients who wouldn't be here without it.
If the whole getting paid really bothers you, you can request to send the money to a charity that is on file at biolife. If your non-profit of choice isn't set up, then ask them to do so. You can also ask that they hold your money and get paid once a month or week for your donations.

07-25-2007, 09:37 AM
Well they have changed some things at biolife. There is no longer cash on the premises. The first time that you donate you will receive a temporary debit card and then a permanent one within a week. What i am saying is now you (the donor) have total control of your money.... it is like having an extra bank account and check card.
LipsofanAngel

so is it still like $20 on a debit card thing? Or do they give more?
amanda

There have been times in my life, and not so long ago, that I would have given a kidney for the right amount of money. :) For that matter, $20.00 sounds pretty good right now with school starting in a couple of weeks. That would buy the kiddies a few school supplies.

We're not talking a BlackFoot here. This is prime, fine Southern womanhood, the likes of which some of you would be lucky to see in a wet t-shirt. And all you got is $52.68?

despite market value- i do think i'm worth more than $52.86!! haha but uhhh I'd still take that! lol
and I had heard the $200 thing on the radio before too... but i think it says "up to 200"? so I'm thinking there must be some kinda stipulation about being able to get that much.

nah, it's something about how often you go. you can go twice a week. i believe i heard the going rate now is 20 the first day, 30 the second day. so that's 50 a week if you go twice a week. if you only go once a week, it's all 20. so 4 weeks at 50 a week is 200. i'm gonna start going when school starts back and i'm in town during the week.

I'm a little concerned about passing out though.... the last time I donated blood I ended up fainting (first time in my life that's ever happened). I don't know if that was a one time thing, or if that's gonna happen from now on. Also, I checked out the website and it says they close at 5:30...so, days I don't get to leave work till 5- I doubt that would be enough time!

oh, you also get an extra $20 for every person you refer to the plasma place.

Lips, I almost passed out the first time I gave blood. Could have had a lot to do with me taking a hot, hot shower later that night.
I made it to my bed and mentioned it to a nurse when I gave blood last time.
She said that would do it and to eat meat, and anything with iron to build back up.
Isn't plasma what medical people need for burn victims, and other serious cases.
Couldn't you take some book or something to study if you still need to study????
I would talk over your concerns with the people and have someone go with you the 1st time just in case.
I would say don't lie out in the sun that day.
Ask a nurse or someone in the medical field.
I would even call Forrest General nurse on call or your dr.
Good Luck in your decision.

I would like to be able to go to Blood Services and just donate blood however they won't take mine...1st because I have high blood pressure...2nd, I had to have transfusions last fall...I was almost 4 pts low myself due to some meds I had been taking. The meds had caused me to develop a couple of slow bleed ulcers and I had been passing blood but could not tell it...I passed out and could not stand up is how I found out I was even anemic.
Giving blood is very important to alot of people because of chronic medical conditions as well as accident victims.

Lips, I don't know your situation other than what you have shared.
I can see moving back in with your family to have home-cooked meals, and it would be less expensive and you would give up some things to get a safe haven and a chance to put away $$$$ for other goals.:smt102
I see a lot of people in your situation doing that and coming out ahead. And just make $$$ arrangement that work with your family.
