Today, I was working on the lawnmower, with no intention of mowing my 1' tall grass, and on the test pull, the cord came off just as the engine roared to life. 'Damn', I said. I pulled the handle on the self-propelled (the whole reason I was working on the mower) and it started pulling the mower along, so I said, WTF, and mowed the grass until the gasoline ran out.

Now, I've got the starter cord broken off inside the housing. What I need to know is how hard is it to change? What I mean by that is, are there any special things I need to know, like is there a special spring that I've gotta watch out for, etc?

It's not too difficult, depending on the mower. There is a winding spring in the housing, but just remember which direction the spring needs to wind when you're ready to put it back together.

cbelt its a pain in the butt to fix.. After buying a new cord and possible a spring with an hour of aggravation you can drop it off at gary's small engine on e hardy and they will give you a cord, and spring installed for 15.00

I just had it done a month ago..

When you take everything apart and that spring has to be set and you have to thread that damm cord.. If you havent done it before its a hell.

They put a 9mm bolt on the rear derailleur on some bicycles. Who uses a 9mm bolt???

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to open it up on Friday when I get a chance and see what's what. It's a Techumseh powered Toro, so we'll see if it's really a 10 minute job or not.

As per hawkeye, I thought about just turning it over and spinning the blade to start it like a prop airplane... then safety and reality set in... but it's fun to think about...
