View Full Version : Campaign Signs
I just have a quick question. If I have property that borders a roadway, do I have the right to take down campaign signs that people have put on my property without asking, or is that part of the "right-of-way"?

I don't think campaign signs can be placed in the ROW. As far as I know, nothing is supposed to be put in the ROW except by whomever owns it. If they're on your property then you absolutely have the right to take them down.
I'd take 'em down and play dumb.

Signs can't legally be put in the city or county right-of-way and they can't be put on your private property without your permission. Take 'em down and toss away. Keep the metal frame. They work good for tomato stakes and 1001 other uses.

Candidates and their supporters are supposed to get permission from a landowner before putting up signs. On ROW, the state or county will remove them to mow. If the land is yours (such as ROW running down your property), have a 'pulling party'! [and by all means, save the wire].

I've seen some campaign signs used to promote yard sales.
People just taped or glued a sheet of paper over the candidate's name and other information. :-D
It might be fun to use this thread to come up with the "1001 ways to recycle campaign signs."

I have a cousin who is a Paramedic down on the coast. He is nearly deaf and one night to play a prank on him, his co-workers went around gathering campaign signs and put about 500 of them in his yard. He never heard a thing... Poor guy woke up and didn't know where he was!

I need some signs to make "testing folders". If you have some in your yard and they are made from that honeycomb type material, let me know. I need some.:)

You could come drive through my neighborhood...there's several John Arthur Eaves signs stuck in yards next to street signs, telephone poles, etc. Not sure if they're that honeycomb material, but I could check for you. :-D

Ashamed to admit it, but as a teenager we did the same thing using campaign signs and realtor signs. Shame on me.

I propose we ban the small signs you see in yards and on road sides. That would eliminate ROW encroachments and put an end to what I consider nothing more than roadside litter. If we limited the campaigns to door knocking, push cards, billboards, and the media it do wonders for litter and community asthetics.

Poor guy woke up and didn't know where he was!I also heard that back in 1991 when Billy McGee was first elected Sheriff, someone, or some people, surrounded the Hattiesburg American sign in front of their building with NUMEROUS Billy McGee signs after they endorsed another candidate and very publicly attacked him in the paper. At least, that's what I heard.

We used to 'borrow' them back in high school. We'd stick them in other peoples yards and stuff, until we got chased by a couple of Doberman Pinchers, in front of a well known attorney's house outside Petal by a certian cotton field on Herrigton Rd.....................did i just say that out loud?

I noticed this morning a guy from Hattiesburg Clinic pulling up bunches of signs from their frontage & throwing them away. Just because it doesn't have a business or sign on it doesn't mean it's public property. A lot of people are having problems with this.
Also, State county & local maintenance crews, when mowing the shoulders of roads don't have time to stop & move your signs so if you put them in the mowing area they will be mown down, then the property owner is responsible for cleaning up a mess you caused. Not a good way to win votes, and it literally has your name all over it.
Make sure you know whose land you are putting your signs on & get permission, also make sure to keep them out of maintenance areas. And, don't think that just because another candidate put his signs somewhere, that you can too. Remember he might not be as smart as you. That's why you're running against him, right?
Be polite when placing your signs.
I just have a quick question. If I have property that borders a roadway, do I have the right to take down campaign signs that people have put on my property without asking, or is that part of the "right-of-way"?
* If it's beside a roadway, the state may have a right-of-way to it for public utilities but you still own it, pay the taxes on it and it is yours. Woe be to those that can become king of the mountain by forcing me to accept what I don't want on my own property.
"There can be only one!"
Take the signs up if you don't want them. People approach me every election year asking to put signs on my property but I don't really want that. If I choose to vote for my best friend I will do that for him/her but I don't work my a$$ off for what I have and keep it the way I want it for anyone else to tell me how it will be.

No political signs are supposed to be allowed on ROW. However, there are many uses for old signs. They make good targets if you want to do some target practice. Just staple a target to the sign and use it over and over again.
Another good use is to make a ceiling in a shed. A friend of mine took them and stapled them to the rafters, which is a good way to keep out the carpenter bees and wasps. Paint over it if you want to
