That's why my MS parents refused to let me stay at my house by myself. Well that and the MPs driving through the neighborhood. They told me if I hadn't come back on my own, they were coming to find me. They knew the street I lived on but couldn't remember the number.

Since the conversation has mostly migrated to talks about Katrina. Here's one final video I made after we took a trip to the gulf coast a few months after the storm.
The first part has some before and after comparison shots, the rest are just pictures of "afters".

After the gas got cut off I just broke up limbs laying on the ground to put in the grill & cook on. Save your grease, scrap paper soaked in grease will start a fire as well as lighter fluid.
Dryer lint is a great firestarter, too.

Crazy science: You can start a fire quickly by touching a 9v battery to steel wool. Your car battery will work too but dangerous & less practical.

While I was terribly disturbed by the death and distruction following the storm, I loved the time when the phone's weren't working, the neighbors walked over to check on each other and shared food from our freezers. The work was hard. I cooked outside and it was some of the best food we thought we'd ever had.
Cleaning up the mess was an overwhelming endeavor. But, I loved that time- I focused on what was important in life and felt in a way that I had matured and finally was a capable adult. I guess I saw that I had what it took to make it through-
I, too, missed the A/C. And it is always dark at night out where we live-

My mom has a movie she took of some skate boarders using an umbrella to sail down the road with. Then limbs & junk started flying around & they went inside. Then a tree fell on their house. Then a tree fell on my mom's house. Then a garage went by. Great footage, but it's on that old fashioned video so I can't upload it.

I had a tree crew camping across the street from me, otherwise I was alone on my block. If I stay this time, I'm definitely having a gun. What I'd prefer is to have folks from the Coast come up and let a few people camp out here. I know somebody who has a ministry down there, maybe I should get in touch and offer an invite.

But, maybe one day if I try hard enough............
Remember if you are storing gas for your generator, store it away from your house & from the generator, some relatives out near Lumberton had a near disaster after the katrina because of a gas can next to a generator in the garage.

Has anybody got an update on the storms movement/location? I can't seem to find anything & I like to make sure my anxiety level is properly tuned.
One thing I don't know if any one has mentioned, is luxury supplies. I know it sounds frivolous, but deodorant, soap and shampoo, razors, etc. can become precious if you don't have them & having them improves moral. Cookies & sweets for the kids & though I hate to mention it Liquor & cigarettes for the adults can be a comfort in times of stress. A friend of mine was almost mobbed when he walked down the street with a wagon load of Marlboros. Speaking of wagons, those little kids wagons, like a radio flyer thing come in handy when you're saving gas.

One of the most useful items during the last aftermath was a combination radio/flashlight, that runs on solar, dynamo or battery power. I had a big one that cost about $70, but it was clunky & difficult to use. Several years earlier my brother gave me a cheap pocket size one that I think he got at a truck stop. That little thing worked great! It even came with extra light bulbs & a place to hook up a longer antenna.

I Hope Dean is nothing to worry about, but I remember I was so confident Katrina was nothing that I went to work that morning in Petal. I got there & we were closed. My boss wanted to know WTF I was doing there in a hurricane. I went home watching street lights go off as I passed them.by the time I got to east hardy st. I was having serious trouble keeping my little truck on the road by the time I got home the trash cans & parts of the neighbors tool shed were already flyin' around. I take hurricane warnings a little more seriously now.
But, I hope you're right I hope it's nothing to worry about. And, if it is nothing to worry about, I'll eventually eat all those dried beans & canned food.

The city had the 20.00 max set on gas..so you could get around 8 gallons.. people would get in line with gas cans and have someone else in line for the cars.. That day I swear it was a 110 degrees... The stores would only let one or two people in at a time.. People were buying beer and cigs.. thats all everyone wanted.. The stores made some money.. People would set on the counter case of beer two packs of cigs.. the clerk would play around with a caculator and say "30 bucks" lol

onlyme, your preparations aren't wasted. Ice is just ice. Canned goods can be used up later and get fresh ones next year. We had a scare in 04 (Dennis?) and a lot of the stuff I had stocked up for that came in very handy for Katrina. For instance, in the midst of a Coffee Situation, I remembered that I had several cans of sterno bought for Dennis. Sterno=boiling water=coffee=Happy and Functional Hermione! ;)
However, as a result of the storm, I usually make a thermos of coffee any time severe weather threatens. I did that the morning of Katrina and had hot coffee on Tuesday morning. The "Coffee Situation" occurred on Wednesday.

I like the candle-thingy!! I lined my stainless steel sink with foil and set a candle down in it. Gave a pretty good ambient light; should stress there were no small children around. Since I was sleeping in the dining room anyway (bedrooms having been crunched) it was good to have the light.

One thing about the Candle lantern I forgot to mention, Make sure that the reservoir at the bottom of the can will hold the entire volume of the candle in case it melts completely.

The computer models disagree (normal), but the GDFL (from NWS) has been the most accurate over the past three years. It predicts a drift to the north after passing Jamaica - missing the Yucatan - and gaining intensity over the Gulf to a Cat 5 before diminishing some - possibly taking aim on Galveston.......But that's a long way out on forecasting and it could rightly do just about anything.
The Weather Underground (wunderground.com) has really good tropical data (tied right in with NWS) and you can view the GDFL animation of the predicted storm (spinning clouds and all). Pretty neat. Actually there is way more information than you can digest in one viewing. I'm an old science teacher and have been following weather and storms on this site for about a dozen years. It's easy to move around and see just about anything you want. It's really useful for local weather / radar too (great zoom and animation).

I think we're going to see some action off Dean... it's been my experience that with these storms, each sequential model moves the storms in a more northern direction... right now, two of three models have it landing somewhere along the texas/louisiana border. three have it cutting across the yucatan and hitting mexico/s. texas. yesterday, all models had it going into the yucatan. Last night, one model had it coming into the armpit of the texas coast. now two have it moved more north than that...

Actually, he's probably thinking of those that are off the coast of Asia, and they are called tropical cyclones over there. I think they look more like water tornado's though, than hurricanes.
As far as naming, Pacific is on a separate naming system. They release a set of names for Pacific and Atlantic each year.

Drinking Water
Wine (for medicinal purposes)
Liquor (for medicinal purposes)
Beer (for medicinal purposes)
Cigarettes (I don't smoke but why not gouge your friends when you have the chance)
Battery-operated Radio
Canned Food
Dried Beans & Rice (in water tight containers)
Manual Can Opener
Knife
Guns
Ammo
Video Camera (Youtube will be back eventually)
Lage Dog
Extra Batteries
Flashlights
Generator (sort of)
Rope
First Aid Kit (at a minimum, bandages, alcohol, aspirin, saline & suture kit)
Hammer and Nails
Saw
Crow bar
Trash Bags
Duct Tape
Glass reinforced packing tape
Cash
Tarp
Mosquito Repellent
Water Jugs
Cleaning Supplies
Gasoline
Suggestion: I put some of my hurricane gear in the garage, some in the tool shed & some at various locations around the house. You never know what parts of your home may be accessible after a storm so don't put all your eggs in one basket. Maybe you lose your water & your neighbor loses his food, you still have something to share.

I'd be willing to bet he either:
1) Scammed FEMA out of some money OR
2) more likely, is a renter so he doesn't necessarily care about his home being damaged since he won't foot the bill and can just move on somewhere else OR
3) both 1 & 2 above
I made some money off of Katrina's aftermath too doing some work for FEMA, but my home was damaged by the storm, and I'd gladly not make the money and not have to deal with a hurricane. I'm all for a little tropical depression to bring us some rain, but not a major hurricane.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Reader said it should head toward TX and Mexico...one can only hope...or you know how the hope goes with hurricanes...hate to see it happen to someone else, but don't want it to happen to you.
Yeah, you really don't want to push it off on anyone else, but don't want to deal with it either.

I'd be willing to bet he either:
1) Scammed FEMA out of some money OR
2) more likely, is a renter so he doesn't necessarily care about his home being damaged since he won't foot the bill and can just move on somewhere else OR
3) both 1 & 2 above
I made some money off of Katrina's aftermath too, but I'd gladly not make the money and not have to deal with a hurricane. I'm all for a little tropical depression to bring us some rain, but not a major hurricane.
AMEN! I have no sympathy for people who steal and feel they should be shown no mercy. They had something in the Sun Herald recently about 7 people being charged with fraud...they each range in the millions (with fines):clap:

Yeah, it's amazing to me the scams people pulled on FEMA. People got tens of thousands of dollars from completely bogus claims on prperty they didn't even have any interest in. It's a shame these all these people looking to beat the system can't put their creative thinking skills to use for something positive. I made my money after Katrina by doing FEMA contract work...the honest way. In hindsight though it nearly wasn't worth it.

One word- Karma....they'll get what's coming...my aunt had to empty her savings and use her 401K to rebuild...she's a teacher, so she doesn't make much as it is...but people living in houses paid for by the govt to start got more money...i hope they choke on it

Normally at this time my husband would be going to the coast to bring the boats home but since katrina we only got a portion of slab left. I guess we could go to see if the slab needs anything.

Dad called me today and told me to make sure to fill up with gas just in case the gas prices go up early week (even if it doesn't hit here)... just the thought of a hurricane entering anywhere in the gulf makes my skin crawl. I'm a pretty anxious person as it is, bad weather only worsens my anxiety.

Sweetie, we can just take it for granted that we're all having a giant, mass anxiety attack. Frankly, it would be crazy NOT to be anxious after last time. Just accept it and make lists and buy too much stuff like the rest of us are doing. Over-preparation is a symptom of anxiety, but it can't hurt! The worst is that we'll eat canned beans all winter.

The blue-line is a big oh-oh. If it takes that track New Orleans is going to be side-swiped by the worst side to be on.

People stop panicking. Gas stations are full, grocery stores are packed. Corner Market in Petal packed out in less than 15 minutes from the the time I went in at 5 till the time I had got out. Cars were all the way to main street....I have never seen that many people in that store at one time....Just wait until the day before....then panic.
