I am going on a night fishing trip Friday with a buddy to the Jordan river. I have never fished there before, but my friend assures me that the fishing there has been as hot as the weather lately. Anyone fish there? Got any hot tips (or GPS coordinates to your "secret honeyhole"?):smt118
If nothing else, I am looking forward to an ice chest full of white trout. They are quite tasty when smeared with mustard, rolled in cornmeal, and then tossed into the hot grease.

Used to fish from the 603 bridge down. Caught a mixed bag each time. Hope you find 'em and mop up !

I do not like the Jordan River to fish in...too many crazy coona**es. BEFORE Katrina hit, the river stayed full of people from LA who would run you over with fast boats and with jet ski's...The three years I lived down there, I am very surprised that no one ever got killed by the boaters on the Jordan River.
We like to take the back waterway at the I-10 bridge (leads to Diamondhead) or either the Diamondhead Cut. Both were usually quiet and we caught some monster fish in those to places.

"Monster fish"...those are such sweet words....:smt023 Thanks for the tip. I'll pass it on to my buddy (the captain, at least for this trip).

I have a case of heavy duty DEET-based spray. Plus my natural protection (hair, sweat, and funk...)
I have fished LaFrance in the past (several years ago). I remember the giant brown gnats that swarmed us when we tried to clean and stow the boat. It was a horrible experience every time we went fishing there. One time I just threw everythng in the boat and hi-tailed it to the gas station on 90 just to get away from the swarming gnats. I found bugs in my boogers for a week afterwards. :smt118

Don't know what kindda boat you got...but we had a 24ft party barge...we would go down the Jordan a piece then into some of the little bayou's that run off the river...also go under the bridge at 603 near the "cave" and go towards the right and back up towards the test site..good fishing back there but it gets progressively more shallow so unless you have a boat that can go into shallow water be careful with your prop. There used to be alot of beautiful birds back in there too...we saw a BIG nest of eagles one year and they had babies....went back the next year and there were two nest, both with babies...the third year we went back and there were three nest...all with babies...I have wondered over the last two years since the storm IF they all survived. They were gorgeous!!! The fish were all nice too! Can't attest to how it is back there now...we lost our boat in Katrina..

Fish the points, Bayou La Craux. Also diamondhead point where it runs into river just south of I-10, and also under I-10 bridge around piling. Remember to fish lure with tide not against. Good luck. And if all else fails eat at Trapanies.

Well, we made our trip. It was great to be away from work and the house! My friend's boat motor would not run pass idle speed, so after fooling with it a while, we resigned ourselves to "putt-putt" speed for the night. This was my first trip to the Jordan, but probably not the last.
It took 45 minutes to make a run he normally makes in about 5-8 minutes. The piers with lights had people fishing on them, so we just tried a bunch of spots until around midnight when the pier fishermen all left. At this point, we had no fish. Then the white trout turned on, and we ended up keeping about 60. No legal specks (but a bunch of 12 - 13 inchers). No reds either. Chartreuse was the best color, in sparkle beetle or cocahoe minnow jigs.
We did see one of the "monster fish" though. It looked like a GIANT speck that busted through the whites we were catching (twice). All I could see was a black back and a flash of silver, but if it was a speck, it was the biggest I have ever seen. Water flew everywhere, all the whites instantly disappeared, and there I sat with a 2 inch sparkle beetle on my pole...:smt022
Bugs were a non-issue. I had a great time! Thanks for all your advice. I will be going back there again soon. :-D

Does anyone on here fish the oil rigs of reefs? I have fished them for years and I hope to get in several trips before this year when I get my boat ready.

Mississippi got oil rigs? Well I learn something everyday. I'll ask my husband about it for you.

Ms. has a lot of oil rigs south of the islands that are great for fishing. You need a good sized boat to get to them. We go and catch some big fish at the rigs and at the sunk ships made into reefs.

Hubby hasn't since Katrina. Lost house in Bay St. and haven't taken new boat that far yet. Mostly fish in Hopedale.

I don`t fish Loiusiana and pay their 90 dollars a year license considering they stole over half of Ms. fishing waters.
