OK, the big news is Chip Pickering's announcement. Will this leave room for the dems to gain another seat in the house in '08?

How about Gene Taylor? Here's a thought I have about "our" congressman: he votes moderately conservatively, but is a member of the democrat party. Therefore he will never attain any meaningful leadership roles in Congress; when the dems are in control, and/or with the GOP (if regaining control). Conclusion is that we have wasted a Mississippi congressional seat by electing Mr. Taylor. No change if he decides to run for Senate. Main Conclusion: Mississippi can ill afford to waste congressional representation. We have a political non-entity representing south state.

WASTED? Are you kidding me? Gene Taylor is, BY FAR, the best representative we have in Washington.....not even close.....just because his nose isn't planted in the butts of the Washington elite makes him a WASTE? This kind of thinking is why our political system is in shambles....we send someone to Washington to voice and fight for our district's needs....he does that well and at the expense of his own political mobility.....and he gets criticized? What a crock-o-crap!

Trent Lott will be retiring before too many more years. Look for Chip Pickering to take his place.

Gene is a good friend of mine...not only is he good looking, he is sweet as they come...and very down to earth! We need MORE politicians like him...the state and Washington would be a MUCH better place! (IF you think Gene is goodlooking, you should see his brother Dean!) :-D Tall, dark-haired...Gene looks like his mom, Dean like his dad.

That's what I am thinking too.

We have a political non-entity representing south state.

I'll take a political non-entity over the current extremism of Democrats and Republicans.

But I understand what you are saying in terms of the way the game is played in Washington.

Actually, I think Gene is hot, but I was afraid that would make me sound shallow and superficial. :-D

Ok. With the blast here about ME being one of the reasons our country is in a political "shambles," I have to agree with you: Gene is hot. (don't tell my wife and kids I said this)*. It must be because he used to ride his bicycle to the office every day. Not that Mississippi doesn't have enough image problems...

Hey folks. Loosen up. I put this out there to liven the discussion up a little. I miss the controversy.

I know folks will support Gene (and Chip, and Haley, and heck even Bennie Thompson) and that's good. I just happen not to. Gene, I mean.

What ever happened to Dennis Dollar and George Barlos?

* joke. I have lots of faults, that's not one of them.

I know what you mean, Mike, I have said the same thing before, with the same response from the good folks here on MH. It is not that Gene is not a good guy, I've met him - interviewed him - several times and he is always kind, polite and gracious. However, as someone said about the "game" in Washington, Gene will never be an effective voice for South Mississippi as long as the Democratic Party is controlled by the liberal wing. It is just the facts. We may not like it, but that doesn't change it. Also, the people here who are conservative and vote for Gene are voting to keep the liberals in control of Congress. Gene voted for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker. He had to. I know few people around here who would endorse Pelosi or any other extreme liberal for such a high position.

Gene is great personally, and he does speak out. It is just that his voice alone is not going to get the job done. It takes political clout. That is something he will never have in the current situation.

So, someone who speaks his mind, is his own person, and represents almost all of the people in his district, regardless of political affiliation, is not a good politician? Seems to me Gene Taylor does very well as a role model that other politicians should be aspiring toward.

I bet he sleeps well at night, too.

The problem in Washington is the game. I'm glad he doesn't play it, and I wish none of them did.

I didn't say that's the way it SHOULD be. Just the way it IS.

I'm kind of like Jethro Bodine, I don't know if I would rather be a fry-cook or a double-naught spy. I wanted to be newscaster for a night on WDAM but unless they kept me up way too late I suppose I could be a congressman the next day, just long enough to straighten a few issues out.

Bottom line though, is we don't need a moralist. We need a congressperson that can be effective in representing the needs of the South Mississippi Congressional district.

As I note, Mr. Taylor - as cute as he is - won't cut it. His own party doesn't trust him, and certainly the Repubs don't. The Pelosi vote was one of those "hold my nose and vote since she's in anyway and there's nothing I can do about it" votes. Is that what everyone thinks is "standing his ground and sleeping well?"

It's the game alright. And his feeble attempts to play it aren't good either.

We need someone that can play the game. Sure there's a line that we all don't want crossed. What is it? I don't know.

Apparently my line is different from the national Democratic Party, because I DO know what the definition of "is" is.

So, Gene is the type of congressman that we want others to be like, just not the way we want our congressman to be like. :smt102

OK. We've beat Gene enough, but darn isn't he cute?

What's Pickering's announcement going to do to the domino stack?

It's going to bring everyone out from under their rocks and the field will be full. I think the Republicans will hold the seat. That Rankin County vote is strong. That's why Ronnie Shows lost in 2002.
