How does this relate to elections? There's already a couple of threads in the Hattiesburg section about this.

He has been elected. This forum is about elections. His is over unless you'd like to discuss his upcoming election in 2009.

The title of the forum is, "Local Elections", not "Local Upcoming Elections."
Talking about the 2005 election is welcome here. Post away, Mike!

While I agree with you that this Forum is about Local Elections, you've gotta agree that creating a thread about the Police Chief Candidate makes absolutely no sense.

If that were only the subject of this thread. Dupree's election, on-topic. Police chief, not on-topic. City council election, on-topic. City planner, not on-topic.

Maybe so, but the point still remains that this is where we discuss local elections, regardless of when they occurred.
Speaking of which, anyone remember when Ed Morgan won the mayor's race in 1997?

I think the elected Mayor and the elected council should wait until after the next Mayoral election to elect a new chief....that way the next elected mayor won't have to fire the chief appointed by the last elected mayor, and we won't have to have this discussion again until another new mayor is elected.....locally.

hey yeah i do.. it was a good time for the city of hattiesburg. things worked back then. there wasn't anything known as "major crime" as bad as it is now.
i could leave the winders down on a car at the gas station and it was all good

That is so totally not the reason you gave a minute ago, when you said this:

Was that the one where he and Shawn O'Hara had the debate on TV, and Shawn O. accused him of being on drugs? That was when politics was fun to watch in the Hub!

We should start a thread on the 1997 election.

Sorry if I was off-post. I was looking for a topic that would fuel a lively discussion and thought it was remotely election-related enough to qualify.
I was successful in prompting the lively discussion part.
Don't I get some Hub Bucks, or reputation comments or points? At least a thank you?
P.S. What are Hub Bucks?
Remember: Tuesday week is run-off day for the primaries. (this should help)

I would never want to discourage discussion about issues facing us as it relates to government and politics, but I said what I did about there already being topics on this issue in other areas for these reasons:
Not only is MH a great place to discuss issues like that, but it also serves as a great resource catalog for those discussions. There are hundreds or maybe thousands of people who regularly visit this site, whether they're registered or not. Some visit on a regular basis, while others find the site through google searches or other means. Some are looking for specific information (we see those all the time - people moving to Hattiesburg, etc.) while others are only looking to hang out, have a good time, make friends, etc. and the archival part of the system doesn't really matter.
For those looking for specific information, and all the people in the future who may look for it, it helps tremendously if the info, ideas, opinions, etc. is grouped into something somewhat logical to make searches easier. For instance, what if someone 4 years from now decides to search for a candidate for office to see if his opinions 4 years ago are the same as what they are at that particular time? Or what if a candidate wants to make sure that he remembers what he said 4 years ago to make sure he doesn't step into a minefield? Used to you could deny saying things, but now it's captured forever on an internet site. It's real easy for all of us to think that what we say here is only going to be seen by a few people, and while that may be true, more than likely it's not.
A lot of the posts here would probably be considered trivial and not worth anything down the road. That may be true, but only the people who glean through the posts can be the judge of that.
It's not like it's life or death if things aren't organized in some manner, but why go to the trouble of organization if it's not at least loosely followed? I'm not trying to make an issue of this or become the off topic police, just giving my perspective of why I believe some sort of organization is good for now and for the future.

That only works if the groupings don't change. Which they do. often.
You won't find any of the election threads from 2005 in the Local Elections forum. If this forum was serious about groupings, it would stop messing around with them.

Any post created that long ago is going to take using the search function. Grouping is important for recent topics and to narrow your searches down. It's one of the reasons I was against making an elections forum. We group by location in these sections, not by topic. Trying to mix topic forums in location forums just creates confusion. We will continue to change and adapt though, and the search function will be there.

That's my point. The idea that any grouping strategy in place right now will be the same 4 years from now is ill-conceived.

Don't even try to group because something may change later? I've always felt that trying to do something right is better than just throwing your hands up in the air.

Doing something right is nice, but in the grand scheme of things, what does one thread matter? Sometimes, you have to save your energy for fights that make a difference.

This is why a lot of forums are going to a tag system, so that when you create a thread, you add keywords to it that can be searched for later. A thread like this might get "police chief, dupree, mayor, hattiesburg". If anyone searches for any of those terms, the thread would come up. In this way, forums become a moot point. The Hattiesburg forum basically becomes a search for all topics tagged as Hattiesburg. I'm just not sure that many would tag threads here in a manner that everyone could understand.
Are the previous 8 posts here "off-topic?"

A fight? Obama's ready to rumble (and he's running for elected office so this post is on-topic :)). . .
