Starting mid-September I will be changing work locations to downtown Purvis. Do any of you have reccomendations of places to eat for lunch? I'm not a big fan of fast food. I'd love it if I could find a nice sandwhcih shop (other than Subway) or some place with good vegetable plates. Fried food simply will not be an every day option for me. Any suggestions?

Movie Star is a buffet style place.

There is also a place on Hwy 11 coming into Purvis from Hattiesburg on the left hand side I think it is called Sweet Temptations. I haven't tried it but some of the people I work with has said it is good. They have salads, sandwiches, and desserts.

I can't remember the name of the Mexican joint, but I've eaten there a few times and it's pretty good.
I just can't quit laughing about Lips having to go to work in Purvis.Ha Ha.What did you do to get this assignment? They are gonna stare at you.Look at that city girl.Ha Ha.

I work for an adolescent offender program. After talking with the court people, we (well, *they*) decided that Purvis was the best location b/c that's where most of the kids would be coming from in Lamar county

Who knows, she just may find a good husband there.

Our office is right next to a law firm place... well, I'm assuming maybe more than one lawyer works there... I already decided I will be skoping out the place when I get in the new building :)

And, I've eaten at Movie Start... and I like it and all... but I try to stay away from buffets. I eat too much at those places. Also, I prefer no fried foods if posisble. Places like Wards and Pizza hut will be a last resort when I'm StARVING (or PMSing!). I need places with healthy options. I'm a lionness on the prawl ( I have no clue how to spell that)... gotta keep up an hour glass figure- ya know?

There is one... and I like Subway and all... but it gets boring. I was hoping there might be some cute little deli or cafe.

You may want to prepare to brown bag it- Movie star, Lt's, and Dave's are closed for lunch. The only other options are Fiorelli's, Ward's, McDonald's, Subway, that mexican place, and Sonic. Salad from McDonald's or Sonic may be your only option...

What about that Sweet and Sourdough Bakery"? It's close to my office... saw a sign that said they serve lunches...

And I'm sure most days I will bring my own lunch.... but we haven't gotten a frig or micro for the office yet :(

There is a place called Martin's Antiques inside the old feed mill. They have a really good chicken salad sandwich....healthier than a burger from Sonic or Wards. Fun to look around in the shop. Fast food, however, seems to be the rule down there.

lol, i'd say! Fotno is just messing with you. The town of Purvis and it's people are definately nothing to "fret" over. As far as healthy goes, is there really such thing as healthy these days? I don't think so. Sweet Temptations will probably be your best bet...or Subway. We're definately lacking in variety of food here in Purvis.

LT's has really went to pot the past year or so. I didn't even know they opened in the daytime? I thought it was only open in the evenings Wed-Saturday. Show's you how much I pay attention around this place.

Whatever you do, DO NOT eat at the Chinese place. I am amazed that anyone goes there at all. The food is disgusting and they seem to be very unclean people. The place needs to be dozed over or something.

Anyway, goodluck.

There's a sandwich place(?) by the railroad tracks across from Pearl River Valley EPA downtown, sorry I can't remember the name of the place. It's actually an auction place, with antiques and crap, but they also bake there own bread and make sandwiches with it. They also have a plate lunch too.

You can also get deli sandwiches there. It is sad that Purvis doenst have many healthy options. It is just too small to cater to the 15 people from there that try to eat healthy. Having grown up and spent a whole lot of time in Purvis, these are your best options.

Pericos - Grilled Chicken Salad

Sweet temptations - Great salads; panins, etc.

Sorry Lips, looks like you might be heating up food that you cooked at home. :smt102 Or at least on an occasional basis. There is no way anyone could eat out in Purvis everyday without getting burned out.

Martins Antiques. The chicken salad is really good. All of their sandwiches are served on sourdough bread. I didnt think they served plate lunches there. They may, but if so, they arent that popular.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone... I do plan on bringing my food most of the time b/c I don't want to spend the money eating out everyday... but I wanted to figure out the best places to go when I did decide to eat out.

and Thanks PM :) I'm really excited. I got hired doing the same thing I did as an intern... only the location I will be at isn't open yet, so I'm still in Forrest county for now. I'm ready for a little more autonomy and independence though- and for an office that will actually be *mine*!!

Apparently, there are several people on here that don't know a thing about Purvis. It makes me laugh to see people from backwoods Petal talking about how country Purvis is. If you don't know anything about what you're talking about, it would probably be best to stay quiet, otherwise you end up sounding ignorant. Whoever said most of the "adolescent offenders" come from Purvis is badly mistaken. I deal with Lamar County's "adolescent offenders" every week and 95% of them come from Oak Grove.

well that's interesting, because I believe it was the court that was the one that gave us that information. The kids we deal with are the ones that go to court after charges are pressed, and our program is typically part of their probation. Maybe more OG kids are getting in to trouble, but their mamas and daddys have more money to get them out of it? I don't know- just a thought. I really don't have a clue on that one... I just know what we were told and that I'll be moving to Purvis (for work) in the near future. I honestly don't care where most of the kids are coming from, makes no difference in therapy if it's Purvis or OG.

why the defensiveness r13? where the back woods petal stuff come from?

I'm sure it is a great place... I'm sure most the folks were teasing about no teeth type things. However, I think the statement about very little (or no) health food options is kinda true. And one thing I've found over the past months, EVERY town/city is going to have rednecks, righ folks, toothless people, goth kids, or gangsta wanna bes. I'm sure Purvis has 'em, OG, Petal, and everywhere in between.

I would guess that they are putting your office in Purvis because that's the county seat and the location of the rest of the judicial system for the county. If you are working directly or indirectly for a government agency, the county owns quite a few buildings in the downtown area.

Most of you know what I do for a living and I would say that the juvenile offenders are pretty evenly split throughout the areas of Lamar County based upon population. There are more kids that get in trouble from Oak Grove, but look at the population. My experience is that kids are kids. If you aren't old enough to appreciate that your behavior can cost you a comfortable lifestyle, then you aren't constrained by wanting to retain that lifestyle by following society's rules.

As for lunch in Purvis, brown bagging and subway are your options if you want to be healthy. Movie Star has a nice buffett (until the property owner sells the building and land that is), Pericos is decent mexican, Fiorellas and the chinese place are sub-par, Martin's has a good sandwich, and there's always fast food. I also hear the jail makes a mean grilled chicken plate. :-D

Thanks Pirate. We're not directly thinked to any goverment agency or the court system... but we run an Adolescent Offender program that provides group, individual, and family therapy for the kids that have gotten in to some trouble. We do work very closely with the court system... because the youth court counselors are the ones that send the kids our way. I'm guessing if the little trouble makinf rascals are evenly split throughout the county, then the decision to locate in Purvis probably was due to the fact that the youth court is based there.

Can any of you let me know if Lamar County Sheriff's dept. has anything that would be equivalent to the NET team in Hattiesburg? I was going to start making some phone calls next week about this... I'd like to establish a good relationship b/w our agency and law enforcement... at the Forrest Cty location we try to get the NET team to do random searches on the kids and talk to them about gang activity and such. It'd be nice to have the same over in Lamar...

I ate lunch at Dave's Down Under last week and was not impressed. The food wasn't what I expected. I do plan on trying dinner there when I get a chance and seeing if the steaks are better than the lunch fare.

Rowdy Tater's is inside the new Keith's station at 589 and 59. It looks to be typical truckstop food like burgers, chicken, fingers, etc.

I love those Rowdy burgers. They also have breakfast sandwiches, such as the sausage egg and cheese on buttered texas toast I got on my first visit. That was a danged good sandwich! But they serve whatever is on the menu all day so I can go at night and get a breakfast sandwich or get a hamburger early in the morning.
