Graffiti near the Mayor's office says "Wake up Hattiesburg!"
Since I'm still new to the area I will make no comment on that...
But what was really funny was the 12 HPD cars milling around the area when I came to work. How many police officers does it take to read three words of graffiti? :smt102

I suppose the guards that the mayor put at city hall had to get back to the streets or maybe they were asleep somewhere.
I was told a few weeks ago that city hall never did get an alarm system after the theft of the hard drives...I thought that was going to be a priority. However, the mayor did get bullit proof glass around his office...glad to know that is a step in the right direction! :)

Oh ok. I'm slow this morning. Every hard drive in city hall was taken and on them were social security numbers for all the employees, their payroll information, along with the information from the citizens on the voter rolls and the citizens receive city water. There was rumor about a conspiracy back then...it still circulates every now and then

Maybe it's worse than we think. Burglars broke into U.S. Sen Dodd's office over the weekend. I think he's Senate Finance Chairman. Now, you would think they'd have a little better security on Capital Hill than on Burg Hill, wouldn't ya?
Just another "inside job!" JUST like HERE!

They can't find do anything about a guy getting beaten to death in a convenience store parking lot with dozens of witnesses, but they'll sure as hell put the whole force behind graffiti where the mayor can see it.
(lucky I have an alibi for that night.......whenever it was)

Petal Misfit, i'm only guessing but the reason today's was cleaned up so fast was because it was city property. the building behind the bagel shop (not sure who owns it) would be private property. You could probably file a complaint with the code enforcement about the obscene drawing and have then get on the owners to have it sandblasted

It would be better if you have a gripe with something to organize a meeting about it. Why ruin the looks of our downtown area, or any buildings as far as that goes. This does not help anyones cause. Someone had to clean that up and I guarantee you it was not the mayor or anyone the grafitti is about. Some poor city worker had to do it, and we in turn footed the bill for it. The message was pretty vague-can be taken to fit just about any story. I'm sorry the person couldn't have left a note explaining the meaning of the message. This will get more attention than the city hall break-in. Just wait and see.

I just talked to a friend of mine that works for the city about the wake up graffiti, they were pissed because the vandals don't realize, it's not Johnny DuPree or Ken Fairley that have to wash that stuff off, it's Mr. Maintenance worker that has too much sh!t to do already.

This little piece of vandalism is now a felony. The cost for clean-up & re-painting has gone over $500 and will end up over $1000. With that price tag I bet the vandals now wish they'd been a little more creative

Just guessing but by the time they pay 8 city workers salaries (probably 4 of which will be working and 4 supervising), the gas in the city vehicles to get there, sandblasting (or whatever tools they use to clean it) it can add up to 500 dollars really fast.

Remember there were three locations that were vandalized.
$170 X 3 = $510 = Felony.
Also, the remover they use is considerable more than $20, and since when are city workers only paid $12/hr.?

i think that was his point of "They should have let me do it".
he'd get the job done adequately without wasting money by using inexpensive but equally effective materials and in a reasonable amount of time without needing micromanagement.

58, I hate to tell you but I doubt there is a dozen city employees that make that kind of money per hour....probably not many who make $10 an hour...the ones that do are supervisors! The ordinary plain ole clerk or meter readers or maintainence folks etc. don't make that much money! I am sure if'n they made that kind of money there would not be as much turn-over as there is!
