If you don't like deet, and don't mind being called Alice by your fishing partner.......Victoria Secret's Amber Romance Skin Lotion keeps em off of ya. Works for Skeeters......Nothing works for gnats or greenheads. best of luck to fish bait on his next island trip.

The only thing that I have found that even comes remotely close to keeping gnats off (the devil's bug) is Skin So Soft and a helluva lot of clothes to boot. The wind works the best. I hate gnats, with a passion. They attacked me all at once (I am talkin' about a couple of million of them) on Bayou Heron one afternoon. I was in my old Coleman Crawdad Rowboat. I was slaughtered.

I must say BOTH work great and neither are expensive! The SSS smells good too...I just hate that "oily" feel but with that being said it is better than welps from all the dang bugs! I swear I would go thru a gallon of it in a year when I was in scouting and we were hiking and camping and outside doing crafts etc...most mamma's would forget to send stuff with their kids so I always had some on hand at our outings.

Skeeters are on dope now too? Dang illegal aliens are bringing that crap in. It's time to put up a fence!

When we were visiting the islands on Georgia's coast last month, one of the parks was selling some bug dope made right by the Okefenokee Swamp, I'll check the name when I get home, but it worked great, was all natural, and didn't stink, it kinda smelt like a fruit.

I know that the amber romance works because I've used it before. The thing is you have to choose.....skeeter bite or a cast iron skillet across the jaw when you return from the fishing trip and try to explain your new skeeter dope.

I can't wear Skin-So-Soft. Not because I'm allergic to it or anything, but one of my first girlfriends wore it all the time, and every time I smell it, I get so h*rny I forget why I'm outside.

I get my lovely bride to pick it up for me now........Funny story, the first time I went to get it I couldn't remember the name of the stuff but I figured how many skin loations can Victoria Secret have.......Man I was staring at a wall full of skin lotions like a monkey looking at a math problem......A helpful clerk asked me which I was after and said........."Uh, Ample Lovin" She laughed at me and asked me what it was for I told her for Skeeters and she put me onto the Amber Romance......Apparantly I ain't the only redneck that had been looking for a different dope!

If you know you are going to be in a chigger prone area, eat a teaspoon of cream of tartar, and you won't get chiggers. It's hard to choke down but it works.

I have thought about the gnat-proof headgear (complete with netting/mask). I hate gnats! They buzz my ears, and fly up my nose and in my mouth. They even fly into my Skoal when I try to get a dip. After a few minutes of their incessant buzzing, I start to hear voices, and these voices tell me to commit murder, mayhem, and chaos.
I once knocked myself silly while slapping at gnats buzzing around my face. I hope they won't be able to keep up with my new boat....:smt118

I find that 70 mph keeps em off of me, but if a horsefly get's in your way while on step.....It's gonna sting a bit! Ouch, that's gonna leave a mark!
