I just got this email from the ASPCA...
With overwhelming public concern in the fate of the dogs seized from Michael Vick’s Surry County, Va., property, we want you to have information on the upcoming evaluations of the dogs, as well as the nature of assistance we are providing to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, CAAB, executive vice president, National Programs, and science advisor for the ASPCA, will be leading a team of several other certified applied animal behaviorists (trained animal behavior experts who have been certified by the Animal Behavior Society) in conducting behavior evaluations of the pit bulls seized during the course of the investigation.
The ASPCA-led evaluation team will conduct several tests on these dogs, including their response to humans and other dogs, as well as their general reactivity and comfort with being handled. No further details on the specifics of these tests can be released at this time.
Once the evaluations are completed, the ASPCA will provide a final report to the USDA, which will contain the team’s collective recommendations to the USDA on the disposition of the dogs. Other than possible re-homing into appropriate foster homes, recommendation options may include rehabilitation as law enforcement dogs, placement in sanctuaries (which will need to meet USDA facility standards), or euthanasia. However, euthanasia is not the only recommendation or option that will be considered, as has been reported in some media accounts—the results of the evaluations will determine what those recommendations are. No dogs will be placed in private homes at this time. All placements will be made with, and through, experienced rescue, foster and sanctuary groups.
The USDA will review the report, and then pass on its recommendations to a federal court. However, much like the sentencing of a defendant, the final disposition of the dogs will be decided by a federal judge. At no time will the ASPCA take possession of the dogs; they will remain property of the federal government until their disposition has been determined by the government.

I didn't know either.
I'm going to be watching for the outcome; I'm very interested in finding out what happens. I talked to a girl I work with- she used to work at the HSSM. She said dogs came in with no teeth, pipes in their legs (or some such) where they were hanging from trees. They weren't able to defend themselves from the others... She also told me she's seen where one female dog would be put in with like 20, in something of a gangbang of dogs...animal cruelty really pisses me off!
I can't imagine anyone taking my Layla and hanging her up by her legs to be destroyed by others trained to kill...
Do yall think he's (Michael Vick) really sorry? I don't believe him.

No? He said he found Jesus, would he be lying? <sarcasmoff>
I am definitely a dog person, but I am not a fan of having a loaded gun around family or kids, and that is what pit bulls are. Dogs that were bred and kept to be fighting dogs should be taken out of the gene pool permanently.

I know that this is a little off topic, but I hate it when people come out in to the rural areas around here and drop off unwanted pets...I saw two more half grown puppies down the road from my house yesterday. Someone probably dropped them off thinking they could take care of themselves.
I know the sherriff's department does not have time to go around chasing dogs, but I do wish the county would try to address the problem of viscious dogs that are allowed to run loose and dogs that are dropped off to fend for themselves.
Vicious dogs? Address it yourself. Front sight....squeeze.

These are lives too and that commercial made me sad. Pit bulls shouldn't be taken outta the gene pool, the owners should be one's who aren't married. Like single people who live alone and want a dog. They can have pit bulls, if they take care of them correctly. Take the proper precautions when they have them out in public. KIlling them off, I don't think, is not the answer.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I wouldn't roll the dice with my family or kids safety because of a freakin dog that was bred to fight. That's insane.

Very true, and If I had a family I wouldn't have that dog either. Just got to be smart about it, and like i said those that have them should take the proper precautions when taking the dog out of the fenced in yard or for a walk in the dog park or anything because of their in bred nature. But I don't think that all of them are bad. It does have a lot to do with the owner whether or not they automatically act out or not. they have that tendency to, but whether it is encouraged or discouraged by the owner plays a huge part on it. It's a lot like the nature vs. nurture thing in psychology.

A few points please. The little snippets of humor are not real funny on such a thread--it smacks of flippancy and too many people work their rears off trying to make a difference for suffering animals and too many animals are suffering because of ignoramuses with sensitivity genes missing. Are you aware of the bait dogs-little helpless ones or friendly ones that are hung like pieces of meat for the dogs to tear apart. Vick did that too-not just putting two macho pits in the ring. Can you imagine the horror? Think of your little pup being used like that. Second, Vick is sorry for getting caught. A thug repeating the mantra of the suits surrounding him and feeding him lines is still a thug. Interestingly, Noriega has been in the news of late in that he will now be given another ten year sentence in France. He keeps getting slammed--is it because he didn't find Jesus yet? Finally, the places where they plan to house these dogs-law enforcement, sanctuaries and such are not putting them into homes. Pits that are many generations removed from this type of ill-bred animal can be family pets and wonderful ones at that. Certified breeding programs to improve the line and making it illegal for any noncertified person to breed the dog is what is needed. A ban isn't necessary. Just a ban on the two-legged idiots.
