NEW YORK (AP) -- Leona Helmsley's dog will continue to live an opulent life, and then be buried alongside her in a mausoleum. But two of Helmsley's grandchildren got nothing from the late luxury hotelier and real estate billionaire's estate.

Helmsley left her beloved white Maltese, named Trouble, a $12 million trust fund, according to her will, which was made public Tuesday in surrogate court.
She also left millions for her brother, Alvin Rosenthal, who was named to care for Trouble in her absence, as well as two of four grandchildren from her late son Jay Panzirer -- so long as they visit their father's grave site once each calendar year.
Otherwise, she wrote, neither will get a penny of the $5 million she left for each of them.
Helmsley (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/leona_helmsley) left nothing to two of Jay Panzirer's other children -- Craig and Meegan Panzirer -- for "reasons that are known to them," she wrote.
But no one made out better than Trouble, who once appeared in ads for the Helmsley Hotels, and lived up to her name by biting a housekeeper.

Kind of sad really, I guess that's what money does to a person.

I've always thought that the filthy rich were somewhat idiots.

Hmmmm...my Sner's will is very specific about what goes where and who gets what. My brother gets very, very little...and if he doesn't meet certain conditions, he gets nothing. I'm sure that to outsiders looking in, it's fairly ugly, but those people don't know the backstory.

I'm sure that 12 million is extravagant and nothing for two grandchildren is...reprehensible. But. I don't know the history.

$12 million for a dog is crazy. Give it to charity, give it your housekeeper, ride over New York in a balloon throwing it out, but giving it to a dog is crazy. I could certainly understand a person's viewpoint that they wanted to provide a good life for the dog because it was their only friend. But that ain't $12 million dollars.

She obviously was surrounded by people she didn't trust. Money.

Can you image?....what will that dog use that much money for?
1. Groomer every day
2. Dog Food every day
3. Walker every day
4. New clothes maybe weekly
5. Vet visits maybe monthly
6. It probably has its own charities
????????????? anymore ideas?

Although happy for the dog (I'm not a dog person) I would hope that if I ever ever get 'rich' that my eyes will still be able to see the needs of so many around me. I would like to hope I would be able to share what God had given me to honor his name by helping those you have so many needs.

It was her money--free to do what she wanted with. I would have made different choices. But it wasn't my money.

That's true and she did. But, assuming that she did that while she was still alive, I would seek to try to help her myself or get her help. In my judgment, it's a action without logic, and a cry for help. Bill Gates says only 1% of his fortune will go to his kids, the rest to charity. This, I can understand, because a lot of money in one person's hands tends to ruin them, but giving it to a dog. A dog.

You don't have to be rich to be an idiot. I know lots of "Po folks" that don't seem to use their brains much either.

Well, some people may view as stupid, but like I said, this is a sign of a terrible life. A life where a dog was more important than people. A life of contempt for those around you. You could be very smart, and not trust anyone.

Helmsley's nick-name was the Queen of Mean. Did you really expect some sort of benevolence from her on her deathbed?

Yeah!!! There are much more important things that money could have been spent on such as:

1. Gone Fishin's new boat fund.
2. Gone Fishin's new fishing tackle fund.
3. Fish-Bait's beer fund.
4. No-Halo's campaign fund.

aaron, I agree completely! It really is a sad waste of money when there are so many people in this world who are in deperate need of the basic necessities required to sustain life - food, clothing and shelter... There are so many people in need who she could have helped...

What happens to the $12M when the dog dies? He's gotta be pretty old by now.

I was wondering the same thing Hermione... ???? It would have been nice if she had at least donated the remainder to a humane society...
