Interesting (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070830/NEWS01/708300336/1002). It may be another way to revitalize the downtown area.

Investing in more upstairs apartments is the key to filling the empty storefronts in downtown buildings, several statewide business gurus told about 110 Pine Belt officials, developers and business leaders during a Thursday workshop in Hattiesburg.
"When I drove through downtown, I didn't look at the bottom levels. My eyes focused on the top levels and many of the rooms were empty that shouldn't be," said Chris Chain, a Columbus developer who in the past 20 years took his hometown from virtually no downtown living spaces to 107 now.

There are vastly different ways of looking at "apartments". Not everyone wants to own a home...and there are very valid reasons for that.
As the article says, a key to revitalization is to get people living in the downtown core. It's a piece of just about every project...businesses on the first floors, homes on the upper.

And I must say there are differences in the apartments that would be going above a store and the huge megacomplexes they are building around 7th and Campbell Lp. I believe it's the larger ones that bring the problems (i.e. traffic, noise complaints etc) not the smaller apartment house.

I lived in a downtown loft apartment in Tupelo and enjoyed it alot. Until the neighbor and her boyfriend burned the building down after knocking over a candle during...uhmmmm....some activities. :-D Thank goodness for renters insurance.

As an aside, if Klem gets elected homecoming queen, who's his escort gonna be? And what color is his dress going to be? :kekeke: I think red would make him a little ruddy.

When I first moved up north back in 1970, I found it so strange that all the business buildings in town had apartments "over them." I mean back in the heyday of the Burg, the top part of the buildings downtown were offices...I had a notion that was the way it was all over. We were in PA...located between Philly and Harrisburg...most all residents were row homes...all up and down the blocks you would have assorted businesses on the first floor...the second and third stories would be apartments. You had to pretty much go to BFE to find single dwelling homes..like we have down here...there were alot of single family homes but they were row homes, one connected to the other...all with either postage stamp yards or no yards at all..maybe a little pavement...NOT a way I wanted to live...for some I can see why such accomadations would be beneficial.
