This is a Butterfly Peacock Bass. This species was introduced to the Miami canals in 1984 as a predator fish to help with the cichlid and oscar problems. They have since become a sport fish in the canals and I'm hooked on them more than they are on my jigs. Heading back in May.

No, those are speckled or Barred Peacocks. The Butterfly is the smaller of the three peacock species. They do well around the cities in South America, that is where they came from. But to catch the Grandes you have to go into the river system deep in the Amazon.

I've heard they are excellent eating, but I just catch and release. I've always flown back and forth to Miami so didn't want to check fillets.

If you'll tell him to email me a phone number I'll take him fishing in some local private lakes.
