I just got back from working in Columbia. As I was leaving, I rolled down Church ST. I saw like 4 or 5 houses with 'bottle' trees in their yards, it was kinda neat. Is this Columbia's answer to our swans?

Not if they don't cost $2500 a pop.

I wanted to do one at my house, but got "vetoed." I think they are they're cool! I wish to goodness I had thought of the "swan" idea and had sold them to these folks in Hburg. It's just downright weird, is what it is!

I saw a bottle tree once that had a light bulb inside each bottle. Looked cool at night.

My next domicile will have a bottle tree, a pink flamingo or two, a lawn jockey complete with a lantern, and a buried/white-washed tire front fence. All those amenities rolled together won't cost $ 25.00!

Whoever sold the Hburg folks those swans has to be laughing bit-time!

I'll take a pic tomorrow of the swan somebody put in that empty lot next to that old bakery downtown by the train depot. It looks like somebody did some extra work on it. Anybody else notice it?

I know ol' BPitt did not intend for this to be a discussion about them swans, but one last comment, then I got another appointment at 3:30. But LITERALLY at least two or three complete Habitat homes could have been built on the money that was spent on those swans in Hattiesburg!

Augustus,

Bottle tree would look great........in the back yard <grinz>. But what is up with all of the swans???? I've noticed them all over but don't have a clue as to their supposed to symbolize.

I Heard It Was That The City Of Hattiesburg Was Transforming From An Ugly Duckling Into A Beautiful Swan. Or Something Like That. Don't Know It There Is Any Truth To It. In My Opinion Its A Waste Of Alot Of Money

I think the swans are ugly......or at least goofy.....remindes me of some cheap carny ride appendage......Kind of like what DeVito rode in as the Penguin on that Batman Movie.

Yes, BPitt, we've gone loco in my humble opinion. A guy from New Orleans moved here, put one in his yard, and before you knew it they sprung up everywhere. I think they look goof, personally. Secondly, I think it points out every drunk in town. Kinda funny when you think of how many Baptist we have. :) Some people have gone from putting bottles (probably Baptists) and putting vases instead on their trees. The bottles were bad enough, but some of those vases are just hideous.

It's a tribute to Jimmy Swan - singer, songwriter, radio personality, Gubernatorial candidate, and Daddy of a good guy, Randy of WDAM. It's about time we honored Jimmy's contribution to the colorful history of Hattiesburg!

The bottle trees are an African tradition, meant to "scare of evil spirits". The light reflects off the bottles and is supposed to keep those pesky spirits away. Are those swans really $2500?

You've heard of mailbox whacking so I predict what will come to Columbia, next......BB guns and sling shots.

Wonder what a cherry bomb (do they still sell 'em?) would do to one of them's swan's "under-side" ?

IGID, we'll look for the picture of the swan. Is that what you used to be an art store as you turn there that goes into Buschman street with the big old house?

I bet that swan won't be in the newly released book for $29.95.

I wanted a bottle tree for my backyard but geez, I don't drink enuf wine or other spirits to get enuf of the pretty colored bottles...I would have to use beer bottles and they are not so colorful! A friend of mine in Waveland had one that was about 7 ft tall...it was beautiful when the sun was shining...it reminded me of stained glass.

The ones I saw in Columbia were actually nice. I mean, I ain't no 'artist' type, but, I can appreciate something that looks neat, and I thought the bottle trees that I saw looked kinda neat. I saw several different colored bottles and I did notice some vases. They had like 3 different colors swirled around, it was 'pretty'. I wouldn't mind seeing one with the lights inside the bottles like someone earlier mentioned. I saw them and just thought I'd mention them.

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottle_tree)might help explain it. To be honest, I've never heard of one.

I have a can planter.
If my brother stops by when I am not there sometimes he will leave me a Miller Lite can in the planter as a momento.

Maw in law had one behind her house - said it reminded her of her childhood (the 20's :smt103 ). After the NO folks put one in their FRONT yard, her's came out of the closet and moved out front. Next thing I know, there are at least 7 on Church St. Pretty or tacky? Just different, like their owners

There was some pretty bottles on the trees in the HA...I would like to know what came in the red bottles and the lavender ones...I would like a bottle tree but I don't have many pretty colors or styles of bottles...probably the prettiest bottle tree I have ever seen was at a friends house in the Bay..it was about 6 ft tall and all colors and sizes of bottles all over it...also alot of different shaped bottles..they were big drinkers so maybe different booze bottles..at that rate I won't ever have a bottle tree worth looking at.

Yeah, but Gloria had it to reminder her of her drinking problem and the mistakes she made. I don't think that is why they are doing it now.

Picture in the paper today shows you really don't have to have anything expensive, they were done with cheap wine bottles and Bud Light. I'll have to get my Rhett to start saving his. We might have a BOTTLE FORREST (or two)!!!!! He'll be so pleased that his beer drinkin' is connected to ART!!!:bowrofl:

It could be the one the belongs to Rare Design. They just moved their office into the bakery. They had to move their swan indoors at the othe office but it kept getting vandalized. So yeah its had some extra work on it.

Im from Columbia, Ive seen them. I first saw them years ago on the reservoir in Jackson. Most water facing homes have them.
