What are the reasons you want to vote for Fred? What has he accomplished in his congressional career? I have heard several times when people who know him are interviewed that he is a bit of a laggard and not very much of a worker and that his record shows that. I don't know that it is true, but I have heard more than one person describe him that way. I am really interested because I don't have a candidate yet and I am still looking.

Simply the fact that Fred has an outside view of politics is a good thing. He has been looking at what's going on as a citizen and not necessarilly an elected official. That is a plus. Before he was an actor, he was an attorney(and a good one at that), and a legislator. He has taken a break, gotten some fresh air, seen different points of view, and gained some perspective. I think he probably has the best idea of what people actually want in a President. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Fred has my vote.

He's got a truck.:smt023 No seriously, he seems to be one of the only ones out there that is not afraid to take a stance on the issues and be able to maintain his positions without flip-flopin....

I've heard that his views are very closely aligned with Cheney's. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, it's cause for concern.

I'm a member. I've seen a number of fred's bumber stickers around lately. Mine are suppose to be in later on. There never was a doubt he's the man for the job McCain sounded awful the other night on jay leno.Someone said something the other day about haley barbour being a possible running mate but I didn't get the whole conversation? Anyone hear rumors? When fred enters a room he does remind me of Reagan he just takes control and he just looks like a leader.Hell, bush can't even act like one.

I do like Fred because he seems like someone I could talk to. Someone who could understand what I might say. Some of the politicians seem to be in a different world than I live in. Now I really do like Haley. He seems like he would stand up and defend us if neccessary. A strong man is needed for the job. Nothing against the others but Fred and Haley have my vote.

Geez-no one has said anything about what Fred has done in his years as a legislator or what he intends to do about Iraq, economic policy, the Patriot Act, immigration, or health care. Are you sure you just don't think he "looks" like a president. At least let him get in a debate before jumping on the bandwagon, don't you think? Surely, driving a truck and gun control can't be the deciding factors? :smt009

TamHill,
Before I put my X in the box I get informed about the issues. That is why I already know I will not put my X next to several of the other candidates. I'm glad to hear he may run. It gives me more options.

Honey... I hear you! I will listen to him also. But so far he hasn't said anything so what is it with all the hoopla is what I wanted to know. Getting bumper stickers, saying he has your vote, and acting like the world is on fire because the noncandidate has announced seems premature to me.
(No one has addressed his reputation as a sluggard, either.)

I'm not familiar with that characteristic. I think the Dems tried hanging that sandwich shop board around Reagan's neck too. I'm not committed to Thompson but I'm hopeful he will flll the bill. Huckabee is the only other one I like, unless Newt Gingrich gets in. He's my slam dunk vote getter the second he announces.

Dollfus46 Google it and you will see tons of references to that characteristic. It could very well be a myth and a dem zinger but it seems pervasive. Anyhow-the most important thing is has he accomplished anything in congress?? Still waiting? Now-if Newt Gingrich gets in at least he has a resume. Would he be able to win or is he not "handsome and distinguished and sexy enough" for America?? Very smart guy though and lots of experience. I like him.

He doesn't even "look" like a President to me. Caught some footage of him in Iowa, and it looked to me like he was a tired, old man. :smt102

Queen Mother Of course one doesn't need congressional experience. But one needs experience whether at the state level or in some executive branch function. Thompsen's experience is in congress. So what has he done in congress. You say he investigates and works well with others. Respectfully, a president needs to do much more than that. It takes a sharp mind, an experienced hand, a keen sense of history, an understanding of the issues both domestic and worldwide, tangible results, and policy positions. What are his policy positions? Do you have any sense that he has been successful in pushing an agenda that has turned out successful and has been a beacon of light? This is the president you are voting for, not some local sheriff. So far I have heard nothing specific in terms of accomplishment. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened. But what is it? If you know tell me, and if you don't know, what does that say??

No but they sure can't hurt... I think not being an extremist either way will also help him... He is definitely more electible in my eyes than some of the other candidates. I also like Law and Order.:-D

Well, I don't know what he HAS done but I am pretty confident he hasn't tried to play footsie in a public bathroom stall, he hasn't been caught trying to relate to a young male page, he hasn't engaged in carnal behavior with Cuban cigars with an intern, he hasn't stored bribe money in his freezer, he hasn't used to services of the D.C. madaam...;)

I was watching Cape Fear just a while ago and he popped up in there. I forgot he had a part in that movie. Everyone will start noticing his appearances in movies like that now. It will be free publicity.

OK, I agree. We wait and see. However, my initial response was to the folks who seemed to already be certain he had their votes. Based on what? And Queen Mother--we can agree to disagree, but I don't think anything is obvious about Thompson except he is a very good actor.

Newsweek article about Thompson (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20546334/site/newsweek/): Is Fred Thompson Made of Presidential Material?
Interesting article. I don't have much of an opinion yet but his here:
>>"I don't like spending 14- and 16-hour days voting on 'sense of the Senate' resolutions on irrelevant matters," Thompson said in 1998. It was, he said, "very frustrating." He may have wished the Senate spent its time on more-important issues, but Thompson himself didn't have the patience, or the desire, to do the kind of ego stroking and horse trading it takes to get bills to the president's desk. Of the 90 bills he introduced in his eight years as a senator, only four became law.<<
is not a trait I would want to see in the president of the USA. The last thing we need is another stubborn, my-way-or-the-highway-and-let's-do-it-now kind of guy ( or gal as it may be....one day..hopefully ). Impatience is not a good virtue at any time, much less if you are leading a poweful nation during critical times. His senate record does not impress me either.
