A sprawling spider's web that blankets several trees, shrubs and the ground along a 180m (200-yards) stretch of park trail has experts stumped.

The huge mosquito trap was a big attraction for some visitors and a no-go area for others, officials at Lake Tawakoni State Park in Texas said yesterday.

'At first, it was so white it looked like fairyland,' said Donna Garde, superintendent of the park.

'Now it's filled with so many mosquitoes that it's turned a little brown. There are times you can literally hear the screech of millions of mosquitoes caught in those webs.'

Spider experts say the web may have been constructed by social cobweb spiders, which work together, or it could be the result of several arachnids spinning webs that spread out from one another.

Others believe the massive web is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

But John Jackman, a professor at Texas A&M University, said he heard about such cobwebs every couple of years.

'Until we get some samples sent to us, we really won't know what species of spider we're talking about,' he added.

If that was one spider I'd say it was time to leave town. Never know when it might get tired of eating mosquitoes.

No kidding. If he eats all those skeeters, he'll be ready for small animals next.
