Been having problems with the ole boat for a few months. I decided to be my own mechanic and finally got the problem fixed. For those of you who don't know a malfuctioning outboard motor will cause you to think some very nasty thoughts. Mine consisted of me bashing the crap out of a Johnson 40hp with a sledgehammer. Anyway, back to the story. I decided to try the motor out this morning at Turkey Fork. At 5 a.m. me and my good buddy Levi (black lab) loaded up and were headed to Greene County. Got there at daylight and started fishing. Went straight to the back and fished some lilypads. Caught a few small ones early on a trickworm. Finally caught one keeper and another one that was in the slot. There were these two dudes who were following right behind me fishing all morning. They weren't catching anything and here I am catching fish right in front of them. I figured they would choose to take another route but they just kept on fishing behind me. So I'm feeling pretty good about myself cause nobody else is catching anything either. You fisherman all know the feeling....."they're probably thinking I'm a pro disguising myself in a 15ft aluminum with a dog in the boat". Anyway, right after I catch one around 4lbs I'm really feeling good about my fishing skills. On the next cast my "weedless trickworm" gets hooked on a lilypad. Now i've been fishing since I was a child and I've always known that you always pull a hang up straight towards you without bending the rod if it won't come loose. Well I was pretty agitated about the thing getting hung up, started snatching it really hard and POW!!!!! That's right, I broke a $50 Daiwa rod in half. What's worse is that those two guys who were fishing right behind me saw this "pro fisherman" in his grandest moment and there is no way that they didn't find that funny. Overall the trip was a good one. Motor ran fine, caught a few fish, dog got some exercise fetching the tennis ball from the lake and got approval from the wife to buy a new rod!!!!
So what were my lessons learned on this trip?
1. Get too cocky and you will be humbled.
2. Getting mad only makes things worse. I should have remembered this one from prior fishing experiences.
3. Lilypads are stronger than fiberglass.:smt102
