Been having problems with the ole boat for a few months. I decided to be my own mechanic and finally got the problem fixed. For those of you who don't know a malfuctioning outboard motor will cause you to think some very nasty thoughts. Mine consisted of me bashing the crap out of a Johnson 40hp with a sledgehammer. Anyway, back to the story. I decided to try the motor out this morning at Turkey Fork. At 5 a.m. me and my good buddy Levi (black lab) loaded up and were headed to Greene County. Got there at daylight and started fishing. Went straight to the back and fished some lilypads. Caught a few small ones early on a trickworm. Finally caught one keeper and another one that was in the slot. There were these two dudes who were following right behind me fishing all morning. They weren't catching anything and here I am catching fish right in front of them. I figured they would choose to take another route but they just kept on fishing behind me. So I'm feeling pretty good about myself cause nobody else is catching anything either. You fisherman all know the feeling....."they're probably thinking I'm a pro disguising myself in a 15ft aluminum with a dog in the boat". Anyway, right after I catch one around 4lbs I'm really feeling good about my fishing skills. On the next cast my "weedless trickworm" gets hooked on a lilypad. Now i've been fishing since I was a child and I've always known that you always pull a hang up straight towards you without bending the rod if it won't come loose. Well I was pretty agitated about the thing getting hung up, started snatching it really hard and POW!!!!! That's right, I broke a $50 Daiwa rod in half. What's worse is that those two guys who were fishing right behind me saw this "pro fisherman" in his grandest moment and there is no way that they didn't find that funny. Overall the trip was a good one. Motor ran fine, caught a few fish, dog got some exercise fetching the tennis ball from the lake and got approval from the wife to buy a new rod!!!!

So what were my lessons learned on this trip?

1. Get too cocky and you will be humbled.
2. Getting mad only makes things worse. I should have remembered this one from prior fishing experiences.
3. Lilypads are stronger than fiberglass.:smt102

What is more fun than one outboard motor messing up? I have twin 250 chevy inboards in my boat and it is double trouble but most of the time they purr like a kitten.

gonefishin,
Sounds like you had some fun, have the fish been bitin' out there? I am going out there my next weekend off and going to try to find me some nice bass.

Great Story Hawkeye, you found that it's true, a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into.

That was about my third trip out there this year. For some reason the fishing hasn't been as good for me out there as it has been in the past, but there are still some nice fish. The ones I caught Saturday were really nice, however the biggest one was a little poor. In the spring I saw some HUGE fish bedding in the back.

Right....a boat is something that you have to keep up no matter how big or small it is.

Early that morning I was using a watermelon seed colored trickworm. When the sun came out I put on a flourescent green Yum dinger. Caught fish on both. Didn't do any deep water fishing.

I've only fished two points out there. One is on the right side as you head to the back. There is a rock pile right on the point which you can see. The other point is at the entrance of the big cove right before you enter the back area. There's a "no wake zone" bouy out from it which has some trees near it on the bottom. I"m sure there are other good points but these are the only two I've fished much.
