Longtime Senator John Warner (R-Va) announced he will not seek re-election in 2008.
Virginia Democrats maintained the Govenor's mansion and knocked out a Republican incumbent with the election of Senator Jim Webb. With this recent Democratic trending, this seat looks like a another good opportunity to pick off a seat currently held by Republicans. Should the popular former governor, Mark Warner, remain interested in this seat, this will very likely be another Democratic pickup in the Senate.
On top of a high possibility Virginia Democrats will capture both Senate seats, several other Republicans are also vulnerable in moderate states. Specifically, Susan Collins of Maine, Norm Coleman of Minnesota, John Sununu of New Hampshire, and Gordon Smith of Oregon face very tough re-election prospects. A long shot pick up could come in Idaho, in the wake of one more sexual scandal that has turned up in the Republican ranks.
Is it possible Democrats could see a net gain of 5-6 seats next year?
