Yeah...some brave fellas to do that...and you also have the ones who wear the ears of a raindeer...or the crazy psychotic ones in your nightmares ready to stab you in the leg with a screwdriver just to hear it pop!

lol...carried away there! :) I'm glad there are good men AND women out there who do these things everyday!

There was a reported burglary in the 800 block of Southern Ave (close to Sacred Heart). It was on the 6pm news.

Another example of someone working hard to have stuff and someone working to steal it. Thanks to the men and women in the uniforms. I hope your neighbors can find some comfort for this new fear that they must have now.

It's a couple of blocks east of Sacred Heart - down the hill.

I hate it happened to them. They're really nice folks, good neighbors and good friends.

When Dad worked in Saudi he said you could drop your wallet and days later go back and pick it up. They did cut hands off for stealing.

See...and they say these things don't deter crime. I think we should keep babying criminals...maybe that way not just dishonest people will do it...the rest of us will join in!!

They really have worked hard on the place keeping it looking nice - while renovating the inside as well. Lotta hard work.
Some of what was stolen are family heirlooms that date back at least three generations - to when her grandparents built the house about 1900. She had plans to pass the stuff along to her own grandaughters when they get older.
Her grandfather was an architect back then and he designed many of the houses over here in the Bay Street area.

Hope they catch the thugs. It is hard to work and keep an eye on your property at the same time. I hope the neighbors are the type who keep their eyes open and will tell if they did see anything. I say go back to hard labor in jails like they used to do. Quit coddling these criminals and they maybe? will wake up.

Were they burglarized during the day?? Yes. Broad daylight. Between about 9 and 11 this morning. Nobody in the immediate neighborhood was home and the varmints apparently forced open a back window.

I say go back to hard labor in jails like they used to do. Quit coddling these criminals and they maybe? will wake up.I'm all for that!!

I left my office after midnight one night last week. On my way home, I saw three separate instances where HPD had someone pulled over. In each instance, they had the perps either straddled over the hoodof their cars or sitting on the ground. I really felt the safety of our community has increased tremendously. The attitude of the "new" HPD is unparalled. I am really proud of the guys. I'm sure Mayor Fairley hates to hear this.

Is it just me, or does it seem to be running more like a police dept. since Misenhelter has been running things? When Wynn was still chief, there was hardly ever reports of quick response and arrests. Why did Misenhelter say he wasn't interested in being chief? Does anyone know?

The reason the responses werent as quick was because the lack of officers on the street. Calls would sometimes have to hold for a while until the officers could get a bad situation stabalized. Now they are mainly up to staff so there is plenty of police around for the calls that come in. You see more police presence on the streets which is a good thing.

First of all HPD is going strong right now.. Its really a complete turnaround over the last few months.. Old officers coming back and just having so many policeman on the street is making a huge difference in whats going on in Hattiesburg.. After the new officers get more experienced its only going to get better.

I have heard numerous reasons why Misenheler hasn't pushed for the chiefs job.. IMO its because of no security.. A chief of police can be fired, asked to resign at anytime. He should be close to having his time in for retirement and if he becomes chief and for some reason he is let go, resigns or whatever he will be screwed with his retirement. I really doubt he plans on retiring anytime soon. but if you were within 4 or 5 years of retiring would you take a job that could end at anytime?

I remember back with chief landers was the COP and Ed Morgan was trying to find someone to become chief all of sudden a deal was worked out and Charlie Sims came from not interested to the next COP in a day.

IMO if the Bolton thing does not work out then you could see a deal worked out between the council, mayor and misenhelter until the next election. I might be way of base but thats my opinion on the matter..

The only thing I can say is that HPD is a different place right now and it needs to stay on the path its heading in.. Whatever it takes..

I kinda heard the same thing on the retirement angle. If he stays interim, and some one else comes in, he just fades back into the force and waits for retirement. But, if he is made chief, and Fairley wins the next election again, or if there is a change in the council makeup, he would probably be let go or fired and then he is screwed as far as his retirement goes. I think it is in everyone's interest to let this sleeping dog lay. He's doing a great job. Go HPD!
