I walked by a news stand yesterday and it said that Hattiesburg had annexed like 130 acres. Where is this at?

Wow! H'burg is annexing something? Is that new? What I can't believe is no one can see it happening and then when it does they say, "Huh?" I had a man tell me, "We should have become a city ten years ago to stop this annexing." But yet ten years ago he was stomping his foot saying, "No No. It won't happen."

So I say, let them annex everything because if we are to lazy to sign a petition then we can't complain.

Fernwood, just south of McComb.
I'm telling you folks. You are going to be traveling down Hwy 49S and see a sign that says,-You are leaving H'burg. Welcome to Gulfport.

And on Hwy 98W. It will say the same thing only-Welcome to Columbia.

I think part of the land is the area where Lake Serene Grocery #2 is located on Oak Grove Road, at the Weathersby Road intersection.
I saw store owner Kathy Mayo interviewed on the WDAM story about the annexation.
The story noted that the property owners requested the annexation.

so will this make us a metro city? as far as population increase?

Surely the lake serene grocery store doesn't take up the entire 130 acres. What else? Any residential? I didn't get a paper so that is why I'm asking. And I didn't watch the news last night.

It was all commerical property.. Mack Grubbs on 98 west and also they annexed some land around the I 59 & Hwy 11 intersection.. Talk of building a Hotel in that area..

Excerpt from the HA story:
“From what I understand, those areas are not within our boundaries, but I haven’t seen an official or final map,” (Darian) Pierce said. “(The current annexation) is a concern, but it’s a casualty of war.”
A casualty of war?
Picking battles, I suppose. :smt102

Yeah, Kathy is in a bad position really because she can't sell beer, thus the reason for her desire for annexation. The way I understand it the city would probably annex Oak Grove Road from Lincoln Rd Ext to Weathersby, or something like that. Part of that is already in the city i.e. Twin Oaks Apartments, Sidelines, etc. The city should have to take in Ridgecrest trailer park too though IMHO if they come down Oak Grove Road. I don't know if that would happen or not, but it seems pretty shady of them not to.

What happens to the taxes if the city annexes? Does the county lose tax revenue every time a commercial business gets annexed?
Honey
09-06-2007, 02:04 PM
Now I may be wrong but I think the sales tax money will go to the City of H'burg. Just like the millions of dollars (Hwy 98 area) that could have went to Lamar County now goes to H'burg. I bet we could have used that money for a few things in our county. But that's just me and quite frankly I am tired of the whiners who are always crying about having to give a little more money so that Oak Grove can be a better place. So I say let them annex it all and see if it stops the whiners then,

That's inaccurate. The money that the city receives is money that would otherwise go to the state's general fund. The county doesn't take a hit when lands are annexed; the state does.

Yes, but if Oak Grove was a city then the sales tax money would go to Oak Grove and the people who actually shop and live in OG. As I said, it is a shame that some people who actually have the few extra dollars are the ones who are holding on to it so tightly. I have visited some small cities and have found them to be so well designed and family friendly and just all out pleasant to visit. I wish we in OG could have that and not in up just being on the out skirts of a big city but our own little area that represents us.

That's an entirely different argument, Honey.
You're correct; if Oak Grove was a city, and these businesses were part of the incorporated area, the sales tax share would go to Oak Grove. However, Oak Grove is not a city, and the business owners requested to be annexed into Hattiesburg. Hattiesburg will now receive the sales tax monies that previously went to the state of Mississippi general fund. The county will not see a decrease in funding.

The county should have enacted zoning and restrictions years ago to protect residential areas.
Granted, H'burg is not much better. The city does very little to protect residential areas from being encroached upon by apartments and commercial development. But Lamar County had an opportunity to learn from H'burg's mistakes and did nothing.

As I said, I am tried of the arqument and I say let them have it all. And when H'burg does annex the residential I hope everyone remembers just who stomped their feet the loudest. And blame them.

I have 2 suggestions...
1. Lamar County should sell beer, whiskey, wine, etc...go "wet" so business cannot use that excuse to request annexation.
2. Any residental areas that lie within the H.burg city limits, both current and future...those children should be attending H.burg schools not Lamar.

Yeah. Alcohol-the answer to all problems.

Alcohol is a reality in our society. I am not a supporter of legalized MJ, etc., but I would think prohibition should have taught us all something. Businesses rely on alcohol sales, that is nothing new to anyone. OR...if Lamar is dry, H. burg should not be able to annex and businesses obtain liquor licenses.

Well, I was about to say the same thing, but if they aren't losing any money, then why bother? The city gives the businesses the protections they need, and the county will get more money because more businesses come into the county.

An elderly man told me, "I remember a few years back when the good folks of Lamar County voted to be a dry county. And I believe the churches took a stand too." Wow. What happened? Did God change his mind and I just didn't get the update. Where was that added in the Bible so I can go look it up. Once again we as Christians (me included because I haven't raised cane about the issue) are turning our heads. Hummmmm. I guess the older generation looked out for it's children and our generation is not. And yet we can complain when the sheriff has to do his job and set up road blocks to get the under aged children out of cars. I'm not saying that kids want go to the city limits to buy it but when we say, "Oh alcohol, it's no big deal." What does that send to the kids?

See I knew better. I think it said not to let the alcohol run your life. Not that taking a drink or two is the problem. But see where the alcohol seems to be running the annexation thing. That's what I am talking about.

Yeah I was kidding about the pill. I just enjoy it in here and don't want to hurt someones feelings and I certainly don't like arguing. Sometimes my opinions may rub someone the wrong way. Just know they are mine and everyone has them. This place is becoming like another family and I don't want to be the relative that gets invited just because Maw Maw made ya. We all have those relatives.

Don't blame the alcohol, blame the person...Not everyones experience with alcohol is negative. Many people consume responsibly.

Oh I know that. Having a beer with friends at a get together is not the problem. Putting the alcohol in front of everything else is another thing. Don't think for one minute I am a-what's that word-prude or prune- because I enjoy life to the fullest. Childhood only made adulthood better.

You can't do that. Why, for instance, would you blame a diabetic for going into a diabetic coma, or a person with heart disease for having a heart attack?
Alcoholism is a disease - accredited, certified, bona-fide - disease. It robs the mind of reason, and afflicts the soul. It is addictive and the body demands that the addiction be fed. All reason, all rational rhyme and reason nothwithstanding, when the drug courses through the bloodstream, another realm takes over the individual afflicted by the disease of alcoholism. Mind you - it is NOT, nor should it ever be an "excuse", but it is without question, in chronic form - Satan's scheme personified.
Not everyones experience with alcohol is negative. Many people consume responsibly.
Absolutely. Bear in mind, however, that there has never been an alcoholic who can tell you the day, nor the hour, that the line was crossed from responsible drinking to a devastating illness. Not one single, solitary person. Why? If one saw it coming, there would be no alcoholics.
