Did I read correctly tonight in the Hattiesburg American, that Mayor DuPree wants to lobby for 6 million dollars to widen 4th street from Huchinson to Main? How is that going to ease traffic in Hattiesburg?
This is better than the comedy channel.

Also I find it amusing that all of the projects that total 31 million, all are located in the east part of Hattiesburg.

How is that going to ease traffic in Hattiesburg? It wont....dont see how you could pull that off with the houses on 4th st so close to the street as they are already...but if it were possible, main st to the 49 overpass would be a better solution AND WOULD make a difference.

does it really cost 6 million to build a 2 mile strech of unused road?

It might not ease traffic in Hattiesburg but will certainly line some pockets. With houses that close, there will probably have to be some "buy outs". I wonder if Dupree's buddies in the Mortgage business have bought up some of that property? hmmmmm

All I know is that I've been impressed with the council's ability to keep Dupree in check for the most part. I hope that trend continues.

4th street from Hutchinson to Main is a heavy pedestrian area... especailly from North st. to main. I'm more in favor of widening it from Hutchinson toward and to the 49 overpass. That stretch of road is not easy to bike on. Just give us a 1 ft boarder on each side... works great on the bypass.

They'll have the Trace extended before they get to widening the road...which will make the concerns of bikers moot.

Concerns of some bikers, or most...

Drive down that area sometime around 4pm, and there's a fair amount of pedestrian traffic, bike and foot. Most of them are going where the trace does not go.

Plus, I am traffic when I'm on my bike. The trace is a fine idea, but it helps perpetuate the idea that bikes belong on a trail and not on the road. Bikes are legal vehicles.

I need to use 4th st. to get where I'm going. I may or may not use the trace when it's finished mainly because cars don't respect a bike on the trace as much as they respect one on the road. Evidence by riding the trace and trying to cross the two minor roads that intersect within 3 miles of the USM trailhead. There are several cross streets the new part of the trace will cross. I'd much prefer to ride on 4th st. where cars are at a stop sign instead of down the trace, where cars may or may not stop for me, or I have to stop for them. Come to think of it, I predict an increase in bike/car accidents, particularly around the 4th st. trace corridor once it's completed.

Anyhow, I look forward to the day when the road is a bit wider.

The fact that Hattiesburg is a pedestrian nightmare is a whole other topic that should be addressed by the city. It's been designed for automobiles and automobiles only.

Aware of most of those things, CB. You're not the only one who rides (or has ridden) a bike. :kekeke:

If it wasn't a typo and they really meant Hutchinson to Main, that is less than 6 blocks.

IF anyone wants to voice and opinion on what the city should do with some of its money there will be a meeting tonite at 6 p.m. at the Jackie Dole Community Center. It has to do with grants etc. I believe...anyway they are wanting citizen imput on what they think the city needs as far as drainage, buildings, parks, roads, lighting etc. etc. GO VOICE YOUR OPINION! The meeting is open to the public.
