I love to load up my truck with my 4 wheeler and camping gear and head out to some trails to ride. Around south Mississippi, there isn't really any good places to go, but Trace State Park in Tupelo is a great place to go. Also love to ride those trails at Camp Claiborne or Sandstone in Louisiana. Kentuck ATV trails is in the Talledega National Forest, but the best place I've been is Coal Creek in Tennessee. It is a couple of hundred miles of trails up in the cumberland mountains of Tennesee.

The ultimate ride for me is Utah and the Paiute Trails. I want to take a couple of weeks off next fall and go out there. The Paiute Trails make a 236 mile loop through the south part of Utah. Basically, you have to pack tent, food, water, food, extra gas and just hit the trail and camp out on the trail. You can pull into another town about every 40 or 50 miles to restock on items, but there is up to 1000 miles of trails off of the main loop. And the trail goes up into the mountains up to 11,500 feet in elevation. They say that you can't make very good time on that trail because you are always wanting to get your camera out. And you see elk, mule deer, other critters and there is a chance that you might see a moose.

I was wondering if there were others looking at making weekend trips to ride their ATVs. I'm not one to play in the mud, which is mostly what there is around here. I like to find a long trail and ride most of the day seeing the scenery.

Remington, you are an ATV owner that I could relate to. I can't see paying a few thousand dollars for a piece of equipment just to put in through the mud, tearing it up. When I had my old ATVs they were to get me from point a to point b consistantly and without having to make a stop at the shop every time between rides. I canoe and camp like you ride and camp.

You're closer to ATV than I eye......I'm in a canoe with a paddle, I've yet to get up that creek without a paddle thank goodness!

We're a dirt bike family as well. Our 11 year old and 8 year old love to ride. They've been riding/racing for a long time. The 5 year old wants one so bad he can't stand it so I'm figuring this Christmas we'll be purchasing another one.

Well, dirt bikes get you to where you are going a whole lot faster. At Camp Claiborne in Louisiana, it's about half and half dirt bikes and ATVs. We'll have a line of ATVs and have to pull over for the dirt bikes to pass. And when they go by, there is no chance of staying up with them. BUT, the ATV has it's advantages. I have a big box/back rest on the back of mine and I can pack food, water, etc. and take everything I need for an all day ride. And the back rest is comfy for rest stops.

Camp Claiborne is three loops. One loop is 31 miles long and is for dirt bikes and horses only. The other two loops are for anything, with one being around 25 miles long and the other being around 19 miles long. Sandstone is one loop around 31 miles long, but there is a trail that cuts through the middle of it, which gives you around 40 miles of trails. There just isn't anything like that around here for ATVs. There are some short trails at Tiger Creek or Bethel, but you can ride those pretty quick and then you are done. I like to ride all day and not see the same trail twice.

I like riding, but primarily in the mud, as you said, that is all that is around here.

Once I get myself better off financially, I do hope to go to those trails in Utah as well. I watched a show about them on ATV Television and was in awe of it.

I currently have 2 ATV's, a 2005 Honda foreman that is heavily moded for mudding ( can turn it back stock in a couple hours ), and a 2006 Arctic Cat 650 that I had started to mod for mudding, then just gave up. I find the Honda more fun to ride. The AC is for sale, has less than 130 miles on it.

Thanks for the thread Remington, I had no idea there were such places. I'm liking the sound of all this.

Hubby has a nice 4 wheeler. My thing was horses. When we lived out in Jones Co. I had some. That was before I became disabled. :(

Yall are making me want another ATV. I got rid of the last one I had a few years ago when I moved to Hattiesburg cause I didn't have anywhere to ride.

I will sell one of my two. Or both.

Red creek offroad (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/forums/www.redcreekoffroad.com) between Wiggins and Lucedale is primarily for hardcore mudd riders, but there are a great deal many little trails there that do not contain any mud, and every mud hole has a non-muddy way around it. If you just want to ride and enjoy watching others destroy their machines, and occasional babe in swimsuit get turned over in the mud, check it out.

We used to ride in the summer at our deer woods out in Wayne county. We would load the 4 wheelers up, girls would put their bikini tops on (to get a tan) and we would ride for hours. End up washing off in a creek with an artesian well that was cold as Lake Waukaway and having a really good time. Then we would come home and grill and chill....Now it seems everyone is too busy to enjoy simple things. We quit hunting there because of the distance....Very nice deer...8000+ acres behind a locked gate...and not many bow hunters...I got my 1st bow kill and gun kill there.

I ride a lot. I have a King Quad 700 that's heavily modded for mud riding. www.redcreekoffroad.com (http://www.redcreekoffroad.com) is a pretty good place to rife, complete with cabin rentals, snack bar, etc.

There is also a place called Scenic Trails our between Wiggins and Poplarville that has recently reopened after a FEMA trailer stint post Katrina. It used to be really nice before Katrina with a nice campground, showers, and a swimming pool. There is a new place also in Poplarville called Rattlesnake Hills or something like that I want to try out sometime soon, and there is a park over near Columbia somewhere I haven't been to yet. http://www.highlifter.com/forum/ forums usually have good info on upcoming rides, places to ride, etc

There is a big ride in February at Red Creek that usually brings in a couple thousand ATV's. It's fun usually, but I actually prefer the quieter weekends most of the time with just 4 or 5 four wheelers in my group.

I hit the trails, but with my hiking boots on. There are two ATV trails in the National Forest, one is closed from Katrina/Camp Shelby being active. The other one is towards the coast somewhere.

I've some relative in north Georgia. There are some NICE ATV trails in those mountains, beautiful. They got a fourwheeler and go and camp for days at a time and just ride up and down the mountains, pretty cool.

I'd really like to go riding up in the mountains sometime like that.

Coal Creek in Oliver Springs, TN has some very good mountain riding. I went for about 3 days, and didn't even hit a third of the trails. It's considered one of the top 5 places in the US to ride ATVs. Takes about 8 hours from here to get there. Can also ride there 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It's nice to go up on the mountain and park at the overlook and see down on the lights of the town. I was up there during the July 4th weekend and we saw a far off fireworks show on the horizon....must have been 50 miles away. It was kind of nice. It was hot at the bottom, but when riding up on the mountain I had to wear a long sleeve shirt and it was real foggy because we were riding in the clouds. But we got caught in a thunderstorm and got soaked....then about froze to death in our wet clothes. The most impressive thing is to go up to the top of the mountains and see the wind farms. They have those 300' tall windmills with 140' long blades. Even at a 1/2 mile away, they were very impressive.

I've heard of Coal Creek, they got a lot of acreage with a TON of trail on it, I'm working with a guy this week of was just telling me about it. He's been up there, stayed two days, and didn't even see half the trails.
