I dig DonnanElle's, their prices are ridiculous, but if I opened any business next to Camp Shelby, I'd charge an arm and a leg for everything just because those guys'll pay it, so I don't blame them at all. It also feels like walking into a meeting of the local malitia, which is kind of creepy. Aside from that, the steaks are awesome.

At Donanelle's, you get what you pay for. If you want a quality steak, it's going to cost a you more than a fast food meal.

The food is awesome and the prices are no higher than I would pay for a run-of-the-mill, chain produced steak in Hattiesburg. Donanelle's is one of the few places that make going out to eat special here.

I would really like to go one day, need to find a sitter for the kids or take to nanny's for the nite. My son (2yr old) he is at a age you don't take to a sit down dinner.

I would only assume that Elle would be the Elle May poster directly previous to mine, I probably wouldn't have bothered posting in such detail about it if it wasn't obvious that they frequented here.

I dig their food, and thought I'd let my few complaints be known about the joint. Maybe if they tossed some high-profit-margin items in with the steaks to justify the cost, like loading the baked potato or something. I understand that the limited sides is kind of their gimmick. However, only once every couple of months, can I justify dropping twenty-plus dollars on an excellent steak. However, if it went from "excellent steak" to "excellent steak, killer potato, and a hell of a salad" I could probably justify it much more often.

And the bit about the military was serious, I've got a couple of friends stationed in Shelby, and have witnessed the Shelby guys drop some major buck on nearly everything anytime they are shopping. Hell, I'd charge a ton more if they kept paying it.

Been to some great steak places myself (hubby doesn't mind paying for great steak). Weber Grill in Chicago had good steaks, a place in TN has good steaks also (we go there everytime we visit their town ) but I would choose Donanelles over them. Only one place that has a really great steak that I like better is out of town and I would have to wash dishes to eat there or at least wait tables.

I suggest YOU stick with the chains or buy and grill you own, maron.

Sounds good. I'm just curious if by "maron" you mean "manon", my name, "moron", the insult, or "Maroon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maroon_(people))" the people.

I love the steak, all I require is sour cream & salt to enjoy a potatoe, and some crackers with my salad.... and a Corona with lime or Mich Ultra to wash it down with. Any man that lets me have my choice- ends up taking me to Donanelles. I refuse to eat a steak at a chain.

Hawkeye, Elle, and the gang- keep up the good work, and keep it like it is! :)

Sir, with all dur respect, you must be some kind of freaking idiot who knows absolutely nuttin' about de restaurant bizz. I raw food costs is higher and our profit margin lower than anywhere in town. If we didn't own our shack and had to pay lease, we couldn't afford to open the doors.

And, with regard to Camp Shelby soldiers, again, you don't know shit from shinola.

I suggest YOU stick with the chains or buy and grill you own, maron.

I had a great time at Donanelles. I am used to paying for good food, I am not a Mcdonald or Hardees person. You get what you pay for. Personally, I thought the rib eye sandwich was awesome. :smt023 I couldn't eat all of it, so, yes, the food is worth the price and the atmosphere is what I enjoyed too. Just good ol' down home folks trying to make people happy. Every restaurant should be so obliging. :smt023

Just one thought:
Gouging the military "because they'll pay it" just gives me a hemmoroid. They tote your flag so you can sit and have dinner without shots being fired at you and they live on limited resources plus the fact that a lot of them are our guests here. When they have to leave Mississippi we want them to leave with a tear in their eye feeling like we are the best people in the world.
Matter of fact if I see a table of them having dinner more than likely they are not going to pay for their meal.

I don't have a clue as to where you are eating that the food is "so much cheaper" than at Donanelle's... while it "may" be somewhat cheaper, the quality is NOT the same...nor is the service! You MAY need to compare the food (meat) grades with some of the "cheaper" joints so you know what you are paying for.

Also you really rankle me suggesting that they charge ridiculous prices because they cater to the military...and that they are charging "an arm and a leg!" Let me clue you in....Hawk grew up in a military family..his dad was stationed at Camp Shelby...he has a son in the military...I KNOW he would never take advantage of the soldiers! He is a patriot if there ever was one! (I will get off the soapbox now!)

I hope to God no one is isinuating that Don&Elle have ever in our history gouged a troop. Quite the contrary, people will never know what we have done and do for our troops. Many are the times when their money is no good when they are in uniform.

When it comes to "because they can pay for it", 99% of the time your tax dollars are paying for it, either thru per deim or CMF (Company Morale Funds).

Friends can make joke with me; strangers who don't know from where the speak, can kiss my hemroid.
