View Full Version : H"burg city wants money from landlords?
I am looking for someone who can explain what this all about. They are talking about $200.00 a year for rental property owners. Why? I also heard this morning that they are talking about charging $50.00 per tenants moving from the property that the owner will have to pay. This is a University town, not Petal. We have too many students who come and go. $50.00 each time someone moves is ridiculous and I am very unaware of why we are being picked on like this. Seems to me our council and mayor want the Burg to be for only the extremely wealthy and the welfare recipients. The complexes trying to stay at a reasonable price for rent will be forced to pass this on to the tenant. This city will eventually not be a place for the working middle class people. Without this where do they think they will get the tax money they recieve now? This company pays taxes, I pay taxes and the tenants I have are working class who also pay taxes. Take us away and you will not have the tax money to survive as a city. The new city will be for the rich and welfare people only. Then that will take away the doctors and attorneys too. They will not work for nothing and will move on too. There goes the rich too-good luck Hattiesburg-the council and mayor really need to rethink this. Enforce the code rules already in place before regulating new rules. That is the problem with this city, let's fix what's not broke and leave the broken alone. How a$$inine!

Would you tell us where you heard this?
There was to be a council meeting on this today. It was cancelled because a large real estate company in town filed some type of papers to have the meeting delayed. I also read they were having a meeting about this in last weeks paper, but, the paper did not mention the part about tenants moving out. I also called my council person and was told the meeting was cancelled until Oct. I believe the first but will find out for sure next week. You haven't heard anything about this yet?

Nope. How can a private company force the delay of a legal meeting? I don't understand that one.
It was my understanding that they filed a motion in court about something to do with this so it was put off for now. Sorry, I should have mentioned that earlier.

I guess that means I need to sell all those Town Houses I own.
Can't have nothing.
no- those are portable buildings. i told you earlier that it wasn't right for you to be packing 254 illegal mexicans in those things off bouie skreet
I remember the correct wording of what I was told now. An appeal was filed and granted. This will put the meeting off til Oct.

How can you appeal something that has not yet occurred?

I was at the meeting yesterday...yes, it was delayed..I "think" I have some paperwork on it....I will check and post later today...
IF I understood what they are trying to do...it should be something very similar to what Petal did with their rental housing...last year or the year before...it is to have each owner register with the city so the city knows who the owner is and where they can be reached...if I am not mistaken this is to help in locating landlords who are "slumlords!" Property will have to be maintained or it will be shut down...
I think Jim Moore posted previously how the ordinance in Petal works and from what I am understanding the one for the Burg will be very similar....as I said, I will look for the papers I received and post back later.

I would think you could appeal the meeting date on the basis of allowing the rebuttal side to gather evidence for a rebuttal. sorta like puttin' off a court date ya' know.

I've seen the inside of some of these rental houses in the older parts of town... and some of the ones rented to the college kids... they're disgraceful.
Home renters have their place, but if you're buying a house, do you want to purchase a house in a neighborhood full of rental homes, or a neighborhood full of homeowners. Who's going to keep their stuff up more?

There are places where the city would charge a permit fee for landlords, but in those cases, the city had an inspection system in place where they'd check the place out before a new tenant could move in. Is that what they're trying to do here?

yep, pretty much...they also want to keep current on who is responsible for the property...there are apparently alot of long distance land-lords who never check properties or just plain don''t give a rats a$$ what the property looks like or how safe it may be for tenants...then they ask an arm and a leg in rent.
I found part of my copy of the ordinance...this is in part what it says: I am listing only what it says the purpose of the ordinance is..the rest is very long...
