My wife and I are planning on having our carpets removed and wood flooring put down of some sort.
Any recommendations to good companies to use ?
Thanks

let me know too, we've been pondering it also.
a-Nuder question for some that already have wood? Is it alot more work to keep up?? Noticeably less dust? plus or minuses.
Thanks

laminate is really the way to go- more water and stain resistant, easier to install, and looks and feels just like real wood.
another thing about laminate is if you get tired of a particular section and you want something else, it is minamally invasive to just "unlock" the floor and relay.
i've had less allergy problems since i did laminate throughout the whole house- yet you can see pet hair float across the floor and have to sweep a couple of times a week- but that is just my house.

i have laminate flooring. the only thing i don't like is no matter what you mop with, it leaves a haze unless you come back with a dry cloth or towel before it drys.

I have the engineered hardwood that is pre-finished. Got "cabin-grade" at Anderson's. Big mistake. Once damaged, always damaged.
Either get real wood, or bamboo, or use tile. I would do tile if I had it to do over.

When we put in our laminate floors I had the same problem. I would buy all different types of cleaners safe for laminate floors from Walmart. I was desperate to find something that did not leave the haze and I did. You can buy laminate floor cleaner from Lowes/Homedepot. It is found in the flooring section by the laminate and works GREAT. No more haze .

We installed laminate flooring in our living and dinning rooms, and we love it. We have two indoor dogs so I sweep everyday to keep the hair balls down since they are visable. I mop once a week with special laminate floor cleaner purchased from Lowes/Homedepot in flooring department to prevent the typical haze.
Laminate floors are better priced, more durable, stain resistant, and if you choose a click 2 click style easier to repair should you need to.
I would recommend self installation. It is VERY easy and will save a ton on labor. It took us 1 full day to install all of it.
We bought our flooring and padding from the Surplus Warehouse on the bypass. It cost about $1 sq ft. However, you can similar flooring at Marvins & Big Lots cheaper. I would however, recommend buying the padding from Surplus Warehouse as it is higher quality. It is even better at sound barrier than what is sold at Lowes/Homedepot.
Best of Luck

I have the old fashioned wood floors (oak)...I love them...I will NEVER have carpet again...NEVER!
Right now I still have two bedrooms that have carpet and as soon as I can afford it...I will have it ripped out and the woods refinished. When we redid the house in 99 we had all except those two rooms refinished. The woods are a breeze to keep up. I would have gone ahead and had the bedrooms redone at the same time but the carpet was only a year old and I paid a fortune for it...My baths and kitchen are tile.
I would suggest calling Anderson's to ask about installers. I called them to get names of refinishers. They gave me a name of a man from Laurel and he did a beautiful job..and was not real expensive either.
If you get real wood floors be sure and sweep them often to keep the grit off...it will scratch the finish quicker....also never put any kind of soap products on a real wood floor...the finisher told me to use a very dry damp mop with just clear water. No waxes either. Almost ten years later my floors are still as pretty as they were when they first got refinished.

Can you put this over tile? And did you have to cut any pieces? Do you start in the middle of the room or by a wall?

If you plan on being there awhile, bite the bullet and get real wood. We had the original wood floors in our house redone and at the same time added more wood to other sections to match the original. It was all finished at the same time and sealed with several coats of polyurethane. This is well over 10 years ago and we don't do anything special to the floor, just sweep and mop like normal.

I agree with you WB..and the wood floor adds more value to the house than the laminates. With that being said however, the "real" wood floors are a good bit more expensive than the laminates.

Laminate flooring over here too......great with kids, doesn't scratch like real wood. Easy to clean.

also with the laminates if you get a scratch or ding in it you can get some wood stain that is of a similar color and stain the scratch and you'll never know it was there..

O.K..........Story time.
My mom's place was built in 1912 by the Italian government....It has hardwood flooring. I don't know what kind though. Prolly red oak. They have been wet 3 times since she has owned it. Hurricane Elana (leaked through roof). Hurricane George (tore off part of roof) and last, but not least Katrina (6 ft under water). Guess what? she still has the same hardwood floors. A light sanding after Katrina and a refinish and they look brand spankin' new. If you are young and are gonna move later on get the laminate. If you plan on stayin' there for the rest of your life, get the wood.
Mom's floor (http://www.myhattiesburg.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=78&pos=2)after Katrina.....You never woulda' thunk it. I wish I had a pic after the refinish job.

You can put the laminate over any type of floor. You start at one wall. You do have to cut it.

I agree about the prices. We are using them for our tile and granite.

Go to www.discountfloors.com (http://www.discountfloors.com), or www.woodfloors.com (http://www.woodfloors.com) and compare prices. If laminate floors get wet underneath they will fall apart on you. Wood floors will at least dry out. Love them both, but know all you can about both.
