WDAM reports that Win Pittman, as municipal court judge, is setting bond for some people who've been arrested, and then a few months later representing those same people as their defense attorney. Good luck trying to find a link to the story on WDAM's site, though.
This came to light when he faxed the bond papers to the the jail, setting bond for a woman arrested for possesion with intent within 1500 feet of a church or school, before she had even been processed for the crime she is accused of. There is a link to this story http://www.wdam.com/Global/story.asp?s=7107129.
He seemed to say this is an oversight that will be corrected on his part. Shouldn't that be one of the first things that a judge should check on, that he/she hasn't had a dealing with an accused person before agreeing to represent them in their private practice?

The Richton Dispatch reported last week that Pittman is representing "person's of interest" in the Alec Knight shooting case.

I was very suspicious when I first heard this story the other day. He claims he did not know that the woman arrested was suspected of being a leader of the Crips gang. Maybe that is why you should actually hold a bond hearing in front of a judge instead of just having the judge fax over the bond papers before the suspect even arrives at the jail. That way there are no mix ups or "I didn't know" excuses.
The whole thing smells mighty fishy to me.:thumbs_do

But he would have been a superior choice to replace Sebe Dale...
...at least, that's what TDaleBeavers will tell you.

I found it interesting too...especially since this person had been arrested before and probably went thru his court...neither of the city judges at this time leave me with alot of confidance.

Not that it matters but the woman is associated with the Vice Lords.
Also, I have heard that Mr. Pittman has sent a statement to WDAM and it aired last night at 6 but I cannot find on their website what it said. Did anyody see the newscast?

I've heard from more than one individual how Win Pittman has a mysterious way of becoming counsel for many of the jailed accused, even after they were initially signing up with another esquire-- suddenly *boom* they wanted Win.....?
you know, "the inside track." Wouldn't suprise me a bit, this story.

The unfortunate thing in this situation is that Win Pittman's lack of integrity will taint the perception of many other folks that are working hard and trying to do the right thing. We are blessed in this area to have some really great Chancellors and Judges. Whether I agree with all of their decisions or not, I will stand behind all 4 of our Chancellors, Judge Helfrich, Judge Mike McPhail and the Forrest County Justice Court Judges. I think that Judge Vanessa Jones does a fine job in the municipal court. Whether you agree with the decisions of one or all of the decisions of any of these judges is not the issue here. None of these other judges should be connected in any way with the fiasco that is Win Pittman.

Oh come on, you can't honestly think for one second that the other judges don't do the same thing.... Its all a cycle. I know for a fact that the other judges call in bonds and fax over bonds before the people even go to their first appearance. Judge Pittman was just the one that did it in this particular matter, and the media got word of it, It happens all the time. Dont let this surprise you.

What's that saying? "It's not a problem until you get caught"

No it doesnt mean that its not a problem, Technically its not against the law for a judge to do that. Im just saying dont let it surprise you because it happens all the time and Judge Pittman is not the only one who does it.

Thanks for the correction, I didn't think that sounded right when I posted it, but it was the only gang that came to mind at the time.

Well what about the allegation that as a judge he set bond for them, then down the road represents them as a defense lawyer? That's not ethical, is it?

Not at all. If done on a certain manner, it can also be illegal.
