Not true. I know plenty of people who could afford to give their children a private education, but find greater value in the public schools.

You don't have to purchase a class picture. If it's going in the yearbook, then the school will have that picture regardless of whether you buy it or not...if your child shows up to have their picture taken.

A portion of the picture costs does go back to the school for purchases they choose such as computers, etc. At our school, I'm not sure at others, every child has a picture taken for the yearbook and school ID which is free. The parents have the option to buy packages that they would like to have. I can see where you feel schools always have their hands out but the funds are used to benefit the kids with equipment they may not have otherwise been acquired.

Bahlk
10-02-2007, 09:02 PM
I don't think schools are in the business for profit. Alot of the extra (if you can call it that) is for computers and other stuff for the classroom. I know for a fact because my mother is a teacher that sometimes the teachers have to purchase some things for their classroom because the school won't. If there were teachers that wouldn't spend a dime of their own money, then the school experience would be totally different from what it is

SoMissTV
10-02-2007, 09:05 PM
What's being lost here is that the school isn't taking the pictures; a company is. This company has to pay for film, equipment, personnel, transportation, developing, and printing costs. There's a decent amount of overhead, and the photographer is just trying to make a living. Getting school photos is an optional expense. We don't complain that the school makes us pay for popcorn at the Friday night football game; why should we complain now?

Im not saying the schools don't need the money. Lord, I know they do. It just seems like they've always got their hand out. I know I do not have to buy the pictures, but let's be real, I want a picture of my children at school. It just seems the prices for the pictures are a little high. At the beginning of the school year we paid all this money for fees, field trips etc. for the whole year. Now they have planned an extra field trip that is going to cost more money. Yes, I know I do not have to let my child go, but I'm not going to make him not go when all his classmates are going. If you disagree with me I understand, but please let me vent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps if you were a bit more *accurate* in your vent, it would be one thing.

Is it expensive to send your child to school? Yes. I'm not exactly sure why that is, and somewhere along the line it got to be a bit ridiculous. But to be here bitching about the *schools* when you're using as your tipping point an OPTIONAL service, you make yourself appear...slightly uninformed.

I understand r13's vent. It seems like every time you turn around, someone somewhere is asking for money, whether it's Junior needing $5 for a field trip or Little Missy needing $10 for a t-shirt. Everybody wants school pictures. They're a staple of childhood memories. I just paid $42 for my daughter's. Now if this had been back when I had three boys in school at once, instead of $42, it would have been $126. For pictures. I have no problem with schools having fundraisers and kids having to take money off and on for different activities, but I think the school pictures should be what the photographer charges without an added amount to the school as a fundraiser. I would hate to think that people would have to pass on buying them because of the jacked-up price. There are plenty of other opportunities for fundraisers.

Go to Sears or Pennys or Olan Mills. Or don't go anywhere. Take your own. You don't HAVE to sell stuff, and you don't HAVE to buy stuff. Classrings, annuals, and most things are extras. If you don't want the extras for your child, don't buy them, but don't complain because they are not free.

If it was too expensive, I would consider it to be cost-prohibitive. It is not cost-prohibitive in your case, as you have stated you have the money to pay for it.

As for your child's Christmas, I would never presume to tell you how to run your finances.

I have no children. If you are implying that I do not understand the argument because I do not have children, that would be a fallacious argument to make. I feel your pain. Sure it is easy to say, "Well don't buy it or don't sale it" but if it's your little child being left out then it does hurt deep inside. How could I not want my child to go on the special field trip if they sold the christmas wrapping paper. I just couldn't picture my little one sitting in the classroom all by themselves while the others were on the trip to Burketts. I strugled thru school and many times the extras were impossible so I learned to pick what was more important. You know, do I want lunch or that candy bar that the beta club is selling? I have found with my own kids that they didn't want all the extras. Neither one of them wanted the class rings or the fancy graduation packets. Or for their friends either. Now in defence to the teachers I know they are pressed with the limited amount of money given to them for special things for their rooms. I think that is where volunteers and donated stuff can be a big help. So I feel your pain and I have ears for listening. We all need to vent without ridicule and today happens to be r13 turn. Tomorrow may be SoMissTv or Fuzzis or jmb. So go ahead r13. I'm listening.

Sorry, SoMissTV. I groaned you and you said that most folks that groaned you were fools. You hit a nerve. I remember standing on my front porch wondering if I would have to sell my paid for house to fund the emergency airlift and later surgeries that would save my eldest grandchild's life. I would have done it in a heartbeat if necessary. No I didn't have to sell the house and my grandchild is now 9 years old and one of the lights of my life. I just kinda get upset at people that complain about SMALL stuff that they do not have to have. Simply do not have school pictures made if you cannot afford them. It will not kill your child!

The whole do-you-have-children statement really irks me. Dan Porter had two beautiful children. He killed them to spite his ex-wife. Britney Spears has two children that she could give a damn less about. Being a parent doesn't mean that you're an expert on what it means to have children or all things associated with children.

By all means put your children first...but you should know that putting your children first doesn't mean giving them *stuff*...because the stuff, even the school pictures, fades and becomes insignificant. They'll remember the lessons you teach them and the love you give...which doesn't really have a whole lot to do with *stuff*.

Then why are you even in this conversation.

Because one doesn't have to have children in order to discuss financial priorities and market rates.

Besides, suggesting that having children opens up a new world of understanding otherwise unattainable is akin to saying that one cannot appreciate music without being a musician, or one cannot officiate football without having played football. Sure, it helps, but is not required for an essential understanding. Will I want class photos of my child one day? Yes. Will I sacrifice a car note or mortgage note in order to purchase them? No. I know when photos are taken; I know approximately how much they cost; I know to save for them ahead of time. Are they too expensive? If I believe they are, I won't pay for them. That's what, "too expensive" means.

SoMissTV

precisely. You can't buy your child's love.

It has nothing to do with "buying their love". It has to do with the child not being able to participate with the other children, i.e. sitting in a classroom by himself while the other kids go on a field trip, because mommy and daddy can't afford to buy whatever the school sends home.

What do you mean? You started this thread by complaining that school photos are too expensive, and the school should do something about it. I said that if they were too expensive, then don't buy them. If enough parents take this same route, then the photo company has to come up with an alternate pricing strategy. Somehow you're now telling me about children staying home on field trips because they didn't sell wrapping paper, which is a completely different argument. There is no reward incentive for the child if their parents buy photos, is there?

countrygirl
10-02-2007, 10:12 PM
I think every child CAN and SHOULD learn that there are things that they CAN and CANNOT do, and things that they CAN and CANNOT have. For whatever reason. The eldest grandchild cannot participate in some sports....and has not been invited to certain events because of this. We can either sit around crying about it, or encourage the child in the avenues in which he/she can succeed. I think this occurs with ALL children, whether they are handicapped or not.

One of the reasons they are too expensive is because the prices are jacked up for the school to take a cut.

Then tell the school that you refuse to buy the photos for that reason. If enough parents join you in refusing to purchase photos, the school will rethink the policy. If parents just continue to pay the rate without complaint to the school officials, they will not change their ways.

School pictures ARE OPTIONAL! I retired as a teacher a few years ago, but when I taught, there were a number of kids that did not buy the photos. There was no big deal about it....No one made fun of anybody...the teachers would not allow it...Some kids had 2 pics made or bought 2 packages..whatever. The pictures are taken so quickly that the kids really don't notice anything. It's really not a big deal. I'm just wondering why so many folks are getting their "panties in a wad" over nothing.
