OUCH!

I'm glad to hear his injuries weren't life threatening. I'm curious as to how fast the truck was going when it hit him. It couldn't have been "that" fast, eh? :smt102

It was probably the same idiot who thought he could just zoom on across 4th St. at the pedestrian crossing and the world is supposed to stop for him.

Dang bikers, always scratchin' up yer paint. You know they can cause as much suspension damage as some of these potholes.

And bicycle hemets should be outlawed. They'll crack your oil pan.

why shouldn't he?

Most students don't know bike laws or common courtesy... most drivers generalize all bikers from the mistakes of 2 or 3.

What would be wrong if, let's just say, there were bike parking areas on the perimeters of the campus where students who needed them as transportation "to' school parked them, locked them, and left them, and walked from class to class to lunch, to the library, etc, then walked to those parking areas, unlocked the bicycles and rode them home?

why when there are bike racks all over campus?

plus, then you have more peds getting hit.

My earlier statement meant: I would propose that any bicycles ridden TO the campus, be parked on the perimeter and not ridden on the streets, sidewalks, or any other areas ON the campus - for the safety of everyone.

How fast does a cell phone travel?

Hob684

it is... this has been discussed numerous times. Let it go.

If you want to know my views then go find the thread from about a month ago where this whole thing was talked through... i believe its "Danny Rigel wants to radar" or something to that nature..

I've never been hit by a vehicle. I ride defensivley. I almost got hit once, but it was because the driver was being negligent. I've been hit in my car twice. I see no difference. I'm better at escaping on my bike, though.

Wouldn't it make more sense to restrict vehicular traffic withing the interior of campus? :smt102 Seems to me that would be the safest option...

I know on Ole Miss' campus certain areas are blocked to traffic from 7:00-3:00 or some similar time frame.

The majority of the parking has been moved to the perimeter of campus already, so restricting traffic really shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience. Not to mention it would make the area between Liberal Arts and the Business building more like a crosswalk and less like a game of Frogger! :ohnoes:

I live on Campus and almost get hit Everyday. In fact, almost got hit getting to the Cook library just a few moments ago.I know security is doing the best job possible but with all this freaking road work it's overflowing the roadrager's to USM even more so.

The bike darted out in front of the truck, he was moving slow. More of a "she hit the truck" than the other way around. The bike was'nt intentionally targeted or anything like that. And I'm sure the bike rider did'nt wake up this morning with the goal of getting involved in an accident. Hope she recovers. The guy that hit her was pretty upset about the whole thing, understandebly so.
Tommy Speed was the guy in the golf cart that was hit yesterday. He's doing OK, last I heard, messed his leg up pretty good. He's a good guy, hope he recovers.

From someone who drives on campus every day at various times throughout the day--here's my opinion on the problems.
1) NOBODY looks before crossing the road.
2)Cellphone use...by pedestrians and drivers...is going to get someone on that campus killed sooner than later. I'm as guilty as anyone, but I'm trying to do better lately.
3)NOBODY, on bikes or foot, uses the crosswalks.
4)Too much road construction at one time.

I go out of my way to be courteous and let people cross, whether they're on foot, on bike, or in a car. But there's always someone that's pissed because a physical plant truck/car "nearly ran them over"- I can't vouch for or control anyone else's vehicle but my own.

The only person I can control in this matter is ME. I try to be overly courteous and defensive when driving on campus. Hopefully everyone else does the same.

Well, I'd like to find the bike rider who chained his bike to the already-too-narrow ramp into College Hall and rendered the ramp impassible to wheel chair users.

Where is this?

at the intersection of Golden Eagle and Black & Gold Boulevard

Where is this?

Turning off of 4th street south into USM (that road is "Golden Eagle Drive" or something like that). The street thru the parking lot between Bond Hall and Walker Science (runs between Scott Hall and Vann Hall also) is Black and Gold Boulevard...i think. I could have it backwards LOL I drive through there several times a day but still can't remember!!

As you turn into the campus off of 4th Street, there are two raised concrete "speed bumps" that double as crosswalks. The accident occurred in the vicinity of the first one.

i think if crosswalks were enforced and bike riders knew the rules of the road, there would be a lot less problems. i know lots of bike riders who know the rules, but i've seen too many on campus that just run stop signs cause they dont want to have to stop.

I agree 100% with the total restriction (other then emergencies and wheelchairs or golf carts for handicapped persons) of motor vehicles AND bicycles in the interior roads of the campus.

I ride a bike on campus and while using a cross walk a was almost smacked by a Gmc Jimmy. I pay attention while riding on my two wheels and try to avoid cars and people who are not paying attention while moving on the road/ sidewalk.

That's a good idea, unless you're my age and dragging around books and papers from building to building. Adjuncts in my department have NO office space, not even a desk in the GA office, and classes in several different buildings, so we take everything everywhere. I personally could not walk from across 4th street to where I have to be, and back again in the afternoon.

Does anyone have a follow-up on the health of the student involved in the accident. I've heard several different versions of the student's condition. Can anyone give me a concrete answer on this, please?
