Bonnie Blue #1 said that when she drove by this afternoon a bus and a silver car were perpendicular to each other in the east bound lane and both were dented. Kids were on the bus and Lamar School Transporation cars and police cars were at the scene as well as a principal from the high school. That's all she knows.

Haven't seen anything in news....probably nothing major, no injuries

Saw it. Looked like a silver pt cruiser hit on passenger side. Ambulance was present but i don't know about injuries. They drive those buses way to fast, in my opinion. Two speeds: stopped, and wide open. (Don't know if that was a factor in this case).
Were the kids ticketed for not wearing seat belts?

In modern busses, if the kids are sitting down, the high seat backs prevent the kids from being thrown around in the case of a collision. God forbid if there were a fire, or a bus ran off into a river or lake, and 80 kids drowned because they couldn't get their seatbelts unbuckled.

Why wouldn't that same arguement work in a private vehicle JimmyJam? My problem is when I see kids Standing in the Isles or hanging half out of the seats.
Or getting slung from side to side as mentioned in the Lake Serene wreck. The back of a bus seat is not a soft pillow during a wreck. I can't ever remember in all my years seeing a bus wreck where it went off into a lake or river upside down.

YouTube - School bus crash
i vote for seat belts.
in the video above the driver got sick, passed out or somethin, ran off the road. The student got up to check on the driver. Watch the backseat. Thats what happens when you hit curb goin speed. I think that kid got a couple of broken bones..
the last few seats are torture anytime you hit a bump.

This is what happens when a bus rolls over.

L have been a bus driver. My ouestion was why put 65 screaming kid's on the bus with only one adult? The driver must watch the children, the traffic, and the road. I dont't think seat belts is the best answer. Iagree with the early post trying to unbnuckle all the belts would be hard. one other part is if the driver is OK he is trying to direct the kid' off the bus. Please don't grade grammer or my spelling rember i was a bus driver.

Some kids had to be taken to the hospital but no one was hurt badly.
As far as seatbelts on school buses, I think it's a great idea......but who's going to enforce it? Would another adult have to ride the bus for seat belt duty?

haha, thanks for bringing back many memories!!! As a freshman I dated the cool, older trumpet player who strictly enforced the fact that he and his woman (me) were the only ones allowed to have the back seat. Good times
as far as the wreck... well, I don't know about all the bus drivers for Lamar Cty schools, and no offense to anyone that is or ever has been a bus driver.. but- whoever drives the bus through Lake Serene does NOT need to be doing so. This is the worst bus driver I have ever seen. He/she (I can never tell, they drive too fast) flies around those curvy roads like a bat out of hell. I've come close to being hit by them on many occassions. It's been such a close call that usually gets me shook up, so I never think at that time to get the bus number to call and complain. It's been a long time since it last happened (b/c I don't live in Lake Serene now) so I wouldn't wanna call and make a complaint now in case it's a different driver this school year.
I hope all bus drivers realize what precious cargo they carry... I'm sure it can be a difficult job with cranky or hyper kids... I just hate to see buses flying through subdivisions.... better to get them to school late than not to get them there at all because of an accident.

I THINK the driver can be ticketed if kids are standing in the aisles.

At my school they had a teacher or another guardian that always rode tag along to keep the kids inline.

I rode the school bus here exactly once (due to a problem with my usual transportation) - it was so overcrowded that kids were sitting in each others laps and on top of a milk crate stuck in the back of the aisle in front of the emergency exit door. The driver was a loud, angry woman who screamed for the bus to shut up when nobody was even talking, then would jerk the bus to the side of the road (I thought we were going to overturn) in order to turn around and yell at us more. I felt lucky to arrive home in one piece, and many times I or my parents would end up behind the driver in traffic. She's still driving and hasn't gotten any better with practice from the looks of it... and the bus looks even more crowded.

Not trying to be onesided, but almost every bus I have ridden to kids were mean to the bus driver. But so this does not vear off topic I am very glad to hear that this was just a fender bender and that the kids are ok.

I think LCSD is still running some of the same old smoky buses they had when I was a student...they look ratty as hell.
Conversely, the we passed a convoy of Grenada County school buses last weekend and they have these nice new body style buses with colored track lighting up and down the sides...
it was pimp this bus...
