I don't know how many around here are following the fires in San Diego County (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/14391699/detail.html?dl=mainclick), but I'm intensely interested in whats happening out there. My office is is there, and a good number of my friends, co-workers and employees have had to leave their homes, and don't know if they have a place to go home to.
So, we're all on pins and needles. I'll know it's gone from bad to works if my email and domain login craps out. :(

Fires are nothing to mess with and the Santa Anas are nothing to joke about either. It is amazing how quickly a fire can move when the winds are just right.

Interesting how nature has a way of humbling us, regardless of where we live.

The summer after I graduated from college, I had the opportunity to be a volunteer fire fighter for the USFS while I waited to go on active duty. Out of control fires are probably THE most awesomely terrible thing I've ever encountered. They really do seem to take on a life of their own. Once they get going, we're pretty much helpless to stop them without some help from the elements (humidity and some still air). And you're right, if the wind is right, they move incredibly fast.

I'm taking this from another forum that I'm a member of. One of the members took this picture and said it's five miles from his house.

I heard on the news today that the local cops in one of those places shot and killed a guy they saw setting another fire. All I can say is, "good shooting!"
Yes, excellent shooting! He must not have been on the border patrol.
What kind of asshole does that kind of stuff?
a flaming asshole?:smt102
I wonder if he was the same that started some of the others or if this is a concerted effort by some group?
They evidently have another guy in custody too.

All but one have been able to return to their homes safely. The one got to watch his appartment complex burn on TV :(. One of my guys out there got to spend the night in Qualcom Stadium. Evidently they've learned a LOT from Katrina and the fires they had 3 years ago. It wasn't a garden spot, by any means, but it wasn't hell on earth to be there either.
