View Full Version : Democratic Party attacking Toby Barker

I got a mailer yesterday from the Ms Democratic Party..

That's right.... 100,000 kids in our state have no health care.

And Toby Barker doesn't care.

Toby Barker says he will not ensure that kids have access to basic heath care and he will not protect the rights of parents to hold their HMO's accountable if their kids are denied life-saving treatment.

Our kids deserve better than Toby Parker.

*source Toby Barker Survey Response; www.vote-smart.org (http://www.vote-smart.org)

This is a mailer I got not necessairly my opinion

Well, I guess we know Toby isn't one of the 100,000 children that do not have health care insurance! :)

*** after i finally found what this was talking about the Dems took it out of context. On this poll youcould only select a certain number of choices, it appears as Toby choose the best one for each section.

Health Issues
(Back to top) (http://www.vote-smart.org/npat.php?can_id=69930#Result) Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding health.
a) Ensure that citizens have access to basic health care through managed care, insurance reforms, or state-funded care where necessary.
b) Transfer current Medicaid recipients into managed care programs.
X c) Limit the amount of punitive damages that can be awarded in medical malpractice lawsuits.
d) Support patients' right to sue their HMOs.
e) Guaranteed medical care to all citizens is not a responsibility of state government.
f) Legalize physician assisted suicide in Mississippi.
g) Allow doctors to prescribe marijuana to their patients for medicinal purposes.
X h) Support a smoking ban in enclosed public places.
i) Other or expanded principles

just because you didn't comment on something doesn't mean you oppose it.

The statements on the flyer are a stretch based upon Toby's answer on a survey which included questions regarding universal socialized health care.

I don't see anything about children either...how do they know he would not have answered differently, had it said "children" instead of "citizens"? I mean, I serioulsy doubt it would have made a difference, but still, it is an invalid assumption for these people to make about his stance on childrens health insurance when he was only asked about healthcare generally.

BDD, shouldn't ya'll be more worried about getting facts straight than trying to smear candidates?

oh, whats up with the right of ways? aren't there laws about that? i about got creamed by a car b/c a Jolly sign was blockin my view. Who should i sue if that were to come about?

pardon me? I didn't have anything to do with that flyer.

I don't assume you are personally responsible for all the irresponsible statements made by your party's talking heads, so why don't you not do it either.

I'm impressed that even with the bucket of mud Toby could be slinging, he's chosen not to. He has run a very, very clean campaign and has focused solely on the issues. The Dem(s), on the other hand, has/have been taking subtle jabs at Barker for months now. I have to admire someone who gets jabbed, and jabbed, and jabbed, and still refuses to poke back. It lets us know he is focused more on his platform and the issues at hand, and doesn't want to waste his and our time with childlike, detrimental talk.

I agree. I talk with Toby on a regular basis and we have joked about doing various things though never carried through with them.

Toby's goal is to run a clean campaign. He's made it a point to wait until the legal time to put out campaign signs and to only put them in people's yard who request them. Toby also has black square magnets that go on cars... a MANY MANY MANY of those have been stolen. 3 off my car alone. I believe that the only reason the Dems are slingin is b/c they're worried that he might actually win (contrary to some people believing he hasn't got a snowballs chance in hell b/c he's young and not from here).

One of the cardinal rules of politics is the person who attacks first is the person who is losing. I think the State Dems know this is still a Republican leaning district and they face an uphill climb.

But, I agree, this tactic appears to be a red herring. Calling him a carpetbagger would have even been more effective.

*not bc of lack of funds*

it wasn't prudent to pay the high cost of repair of the satelite plus cost of a new contract with comcast when the church will be moving to the new lincoln road campus by next dec. The ball has gotten rolling on starting construction of the main building.

From what i understand there was no money paid (or very little) to comcast for FBC being on the air. It was a good ol' boy contract which was forgotten about until the satelites messed up and people got to checkin in. the cost of airtime for what FBC was getting previously would have run upward of half the church budget for a live feed.

SoMissTV

Right, lack of funds.

If you really want to get into it, there was nothing wrong with the STL link from the church to Comcast. For years, the church had been paying for two hours of interrupt time daily on ch 6, which was leased by INSP. For convenience, the church took the sat feed from INSP and did their own interrupt. When INSP changed satellites, FBC didn't follow them. Instead, they went to 24 hour programming. When the new GM came in at Comcast, he told the church that they would either need to pay for the whole channel, or only do the two hour break-ins. FBC and Comcast negotiated for FBC to handle CTV11, and call it even. This deal ended about two months after it started. Now FBC sends tape-delayed broadcasts to Comcast to air.

I got the same flyer yesterday....I looked at the survey and what disturbed me is that he doesnt support the death penatly in Mississippi (I dont think you should leave them sitting on deathrow for 25 years either.. give them the appeal chance... and get it over with..why pay 25 years to feed/clothe/medicate someone who we are killing anyway?), he thinks there should be alternate punishments for non violent offenders - selling crack in front of a school is non violent, and I certainly do not think they only need a slap on the wrist for doing it! - and that he thinks we should only slightly increase funding in education.... only slightly?... hmm... that all bothered me more than the question I saw related to the flyer..

OK! that made more sense!! Thanks for pointing to another discussion... i was wondering what the h*ll that was implying! lol whew!

If i were a politician I would have not answered it either! Want to know why? Because of the questions and answer choices... they are "loaded" questions waiting to be taken out of context...they do not give you an opportunity (or so it seems from his answers) to explain yourself or to explain why you didnt put an "x" in a certain block... I wouldnt personally answer any survey that didnt let you answer your way... only gave you a few answers to choose from that makes you seem like the devil for not checking a box...

if you ask me it was a smart move....;)

No lol..or at least I am not... i dont know what is up w/ the other poster... maybe he will answer

the telephone survey asked a bunch of policital questions s far as who u would vote for...it got to Jolly v. Toby... I wasnt taking it, I was at a friends house and she answered Toby.. and it asked something to the effect of even if you found out he had a history of some type of allegations would it change your vote...and I am so sorry I cannot remember the allegations it referred to... Maybe they are insinuating on that.. I am not sure... I just was curious what it meant..and it was more a republican based survey type thing... so I was wondering if they were testing the waters to see if something came out if it would change voters minds...or if it was the democrates hiding behind the curtain...

I'm pretty sure the phone survey went against Toby. IMO, you have to have a pretty sad and boring life to sit at home in the evenings and telemarket slander (and not even get paid for it). Jolly might not even have anything to do with it, but seriously, it's sad. Also, are there anymore debates or public speakings before the election?

I have a question for you, any of you who may know...

I dont know how the political stuff works "behind the scenes"- does an independent group do these "surveys", are they hired, how does it work? also, the post cards..this one says the Ms Dem Party.. Obviously they go with their "party" politician so I guess they just start "picking" on the other?

Just curious... I may run for president one day :kekeke:

does an independent group do these "surveys",

Not in local elections. Occasionally, the newspaper / media will get together to commission a poll, but the Hattiesburg American is too small and doesn't have any money to do this. Generally, the poll is commissioned and paid for by a candidate or party.

:smt103 Ok... I dont have time to read through the posts right now to quote one..but someone asked someone (possibly asked me) to show proof of things and not just try and start rumors... well I can do that..I dont know how to on here..surly i can post a pic of a scan if needed... but I just found a bit of interesting info..may not mean a hill of beans to some... but it does to me...:eusa_liar

I was sitting down w/ my hubby last night reviewing sample ballots (because frankly I get lost on some of the names once I get in the booth... ) and since I am a stay at home mom I have time to pull things off the internet from different sites..such as the NRA and other sites.. If I am in a quandary on who to vote for I look at some of the different info I have and make up my mind. I had already been on the vote-smart.org site before (according to the date on my printed page the 26th of Oct.) and looked up Barker's responses and to see if Matthews had any. I printed Barker's so I could read it later, since it was long. I went on today to see if anyone had any new surveys answered and just looking and looked over Barker's again... HE HAS CHANGED AN ANSWER. No, maybe it isnt a big deal in itself... but ...:eusa_liar

My husband's big thing is NRA ratings...he is an avid hunter and target shooter and gun collector... has the loaded gun for protection..has concealed weapons permit, etc... so that is what he looks at first. We are generally republican but always vote for the person (just happens to usually be republican). We had marked on the sample ballots sometime about a month ago the NRA ratings of the candidates... Barker's was a "B"... It is now showing as an "A" on their website.... the only way that can happen, unless I am mistaken, is if HE HAS CHANGED ANOTHER ANSWER(S). :eusa_liar

BTW the answer he changed on vote-smart.org was on the 26th he did not support the death penalty.... now, on November 1st he does! Which will he do tomorrow? :smt105 :smt017 :eusa_liar

And what answers were changed with the NRA to change his rating  does anyone know how I find this out? I would like to know.

I do not have the "proof" for whoever asked for such on the NRA thing other than my hand written little "b" beside the name on the ballot, along with every other rating on the ballot for the other candidates... but I DID happen to find this morning the print out of his vote-smart.org survey answer he changed...

Why do I bring this up? Well obviously because of the topic... and to reiterate my earlier point... in politics it is all smoke and mirrors...

Also, this shows one of a few things about Barker: (1) Lack of confidence in what he believes in (2) he will say what he needs to win the majority over (3) lack of maturity (<gasp> did someone mention age again?..btw, we are only a couple of years different in age, so I am not some other generation looking down on our younger generation).. OR (4) he is a liar...which of the 4 is it...or perhaps there is another explanation:smt102

So, is he (1) lacking a backbone (2) a good bullsh*tter (3) too young (4) not going to stick to his word?

Just my "food for thought"... BUT PLEASE, before you start yelling at me, bashing me, or insulting me (for those of you who may be so inclined) please realize, I didnt answer the survey, I didnt change my answers, I didnt change my position and I didnt force Barker to answer anything ... I simply am stating what is fact... and if this were what I had in my hand on any other candidate in the election, no matter the party affiliation, no matter the district and no matter the position being sought... I would call them out too... and as I look around and as I find info, I will be happy to do so..even if it something positive on Barker
BUT as for now, I am calling the obvious, :bs:
