The Southern District Highway Commissioner race.
Will Larry Benefield unseat incumbent Wayne Brown?
And if Benefield wins, will MDOT executive director Butch Brown be out of a job?
Sid Salter's blog (http://www.clarionledger.com/misc/blogs/ssalter/2007/10/transportation-commission-races-butch.html)
The whole MDOT / commissioner structure seems strange to me. The commissioners appoint the MDOT executive director, yet from reading Salter's blog as well as other media accounts, the current executive director is calling all the shots.

I hope the answer to both is "yes".

Wayne Brown has been campaigning like a dog, and with his name recognition, and non-partisan position, I think he'll be easily re-elected despite being a Democrat. I've seen him walking the streets, football games, and places you wouldn't expect to see a person running in such a large district.
He'll win re-election. Benefield hasn't done enough, IMO, to make a name for himself outside the gulf coast.

I know I will be voting for Wayne Brown, an engineer,.Very knowledgable, dedicated and intelligent. Also experienced.
I know him and his family. He knows what is going on.
My cousin is also an engineer over several counties and is very dedicated. He was there before Wayne Brown.
I was thrilled about the rest stop that was dedicated the other night on Hwy 49 and named after Dizzy Dean. 24 hour security guard and convenient for travelers.

Engineering qualifications aside, there's just something about MDOT and the current leadership that smacks of good-ol-boy politics.
I even read somewhere that the current executive director refers to himself as "Big DOT."
Perhaps others who are more informed can enlighten me.
I vote for the person, not the party. :smt001

AMEN!
That is why I am reading this blog... There are so many names out there and if it isnt a local office and I dont know the people it is hard to make sense of some of it...or all of it.
With all the mud slingin' it is hard to see who is the cleaner of the choices...they all look dirty if you rely on ads alone!

And I find some of the ads very entertaining.:laugh: I ask around also.:(

The Highway Commissioner's race has been clean, other than Benefield saying "it's time for a change" and there's enough engineers on MDOT's payroll. Add that to Brown's "No, I'm not a politician!", and compared to all of the other races, this one has been tame.
I admit my concerns about MDOT are much along the same lines as Kitty's.

Kitty, you are more correct than you'd ever know. Butch Brown needs to go, and the only way to do it is to elect Larry Benefield. Wayne Brown won't vote against Butch.
I remember last time along Cowan-Lorraine, some land owner had a huge sign about Wayne Brown must go. That project was HUGE mess.

Indeed, that project was a mess. It was a mess before Katrina.

If the allegations in this article (http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071030/SPECIAL02/710300372/1001/NEWS) are true, Wayne Brown needs to go.

Since you know Wayne Brown so well, will you please call him and tell him that regardless of Party, that there are highways and transportation issues north of George County. I'm tired of Wayne Brown ignoring the Pine Belt. He's a nice man and I would probably like to go fishing with him, but he's not done justice for the Pine Belt and SW Mississippi. Now Benefield (being from Gulfport) may not be much better (in that respect), but I would at least like to give him the opportunity to ignore me.
