You don't like the feel or something? Mine was 180 out also when I did my cams but the balance shafts only made a difference at low rpms, once I was up there no biggy, and even at lower rpms it never bothered me.

maybe Well welcome to the forum and hope ya have fun. I saw that you had the GP up on stands today, I was wondering what you were doing to it. I'm still trying to decide what I want to do next to the Firebird....Corvette front brakes or something else. Decisions, decisions.

Balance shafts are just there for the tooshy.

On another not, not sure how your car is but this might save you some headache because I know its saved people headaches before!

In our manual there is a bolt on the back of our block that you undo and stick a screwdriver in to see what position the balance shafts are in.

There is an easier way, not sure which way it is supposed to "fall" on your car, but on our dsm's , hold the gear where it is aligned and on our cars if it falls in a clockwise direction it set right, if it falls in a counterclockwise direction it is 180 out.

I have the balance shafts blocked on my new motor, HIGH OIL PRESSURE FTW!

i could pull mine out and block the passages but i would have to pull the motor. i could also remove the gear off of it but i figure since its in i might as well use it.
i thought they help control 2nd order harmonics?

pooker
11-01-2007, 07:25 PM
I don't even know what second order harmonics are , never heard of them to be honest with you. I know going without balance shafts wont hurt the motor on any dsm period and I have never heard of anyone having any problems just good words from it.

To be honest with you the only harmonics I know of are the harmonic balancer, and the only purpose of that is to cushing your engine from causing harm to the bearings out when you floor it and you have that instant torque/thrust affect.

Not sure how it is on your car but the main reason we remove them on ours is because there is two belts in the timing assemble a small balance shaft belt, and of course the big timing belt. The small belt is powered by the crank gear and raps around the oil pump gear that also rotates one of the balance shafts, the big belt also raps around a balance shaft gear.

The little belts are known for breaking and getting tangled up in the belt and causing a whole mess of problems it happened to me , but I caught it in time, I opened my hood after a run and noticed huge slack in my timing belt, took off the cover and the little belt it self had lodged itself in the hydraulic tensioner.

Most people just cut the little belt off it self, to block them off on our cars you have to drop the motor down a few inches, once you take off the oil pump the kit comes with a stubby shaft that is used to connect the gear that the big belt raps around, the other gear that is powered by the miniature belt is just removed and I used jb weld and a freeze plug to block it off.

Then where the balance shafts where, you just turn the old or new bearings whatever you decide to get, to where they block off the oil passages.

I also ported my oil relief hole because doing this mode has been known to cause horribly high oil pressure on cold starts.

I met some buddies from Picayune Friday night. Willies Nova ran 10.40's and Ronnies Nova best run was 11.70's. The only H'burg person out there that I recognized was the red headed guy from Kim Becks--?Clifton? the guy that had the red Firebird, then a Miata. From the looks of it though, this past Friday night must have been Mustang night, there were a buttload of them there. There was one red Camaro there running in the 10's...very nice and impressive.

It was nice to see ya again and to meet the No Halo offspring. Since your daughter likes to drive fast, you oughta buy her a race car to take to the track...if you play your cards right, you may be able to talk Hawkeye into sponsoring her. Oh yeah, as many folks that came up to talk to ya, you should start a fan club. :-D
