I know it's early, but I just wanted to create a thread so that people who will be at the courthouses will be able to report accurate numbers as the results come in.
As an out-of-towner, I am desperate to hear how the local races turn out. Please keep us informed! We won't have that annoying scroll at the bottom of our TV screens tonight and we all know that MH is the place to go for election coverage :)

I believe a good portion of Eaves votes were not for him but rather GOP protest votes; warning shots if you will, that many are not happy with the GOP, period.
I think it was a turnout issue, though, Hawkeye. Barbour is a pretty popular governor. He has almost zero negative press. Things are going great for the most part.
I think a lot of people knew he was going to win and just didn't go vote b/c they knew they didn't have to. Just my opinion, though.
Beavers statements of low turnout in heavy republican precincts back up both assumptions.

You know...this goes both ways. I get this is about Shawn O'Hara, but it irks me that y'all forget that those *evil* Democrats are your neighbors, and when you get right down to it, they're not a lot different from Republicans. They don't have something special encoded in their DNA that makes them blindly vote for Democrats...and Republicans are capable of doing the exact same thing. Furthermore, they often do and for you, it's better than OK when they do it.
This isn't something to get on a high-horse about.

To an extent you are right...but I have NEVER seen a Republican nominee for statewide office who had no real qualifications for the job or financial backing (plus be a loon to boot) get much more than 25 percent of the vote against an incumbent who has had very few negatives. If the partisan tables had been turned in this race (scary thought of having Shawn in the GOP), I doubt he would have gotten much more than 20 percent of the vote.
I thought it was bad enough in 1996 when the late James "Bootie" Hunt got 28 percent of the vote against Thad Cochran, but this one takes the cake.

There's a big difference wilebill in Lester Spell and Shawn O'Hara, and you know it. Spell has served twelve years and by most accounts done a pretty good job other than the beef plant fiasco. Many simply didn't see a viable alternative, and were wise enough to see that a vote for Les Riley was really a vote for Rickey Cole.
Interestingly enough, though, Spell got 9 percent of the vote in Yalobusha County where the beef plant was. Rickey Cole got about 49 percent and Les Riley 42 percent. Those numbers came in early and that was why Riley's numbers momentarily shot up.
I am looking for a thread for total state elections. And I'm sleepy.
